PHILADELPHIA — Freeman’s Tuesday, April 4 sale, titled Mira Nakashima Masterworks: The Estate of Geoffrey Halaburt, represents the strongest single-owner collection of works by Mira Nakashima to ever appear at auction. The daughter of legendary woodworker George Nakashima, Mira has overseen the family’s storied New Hope, Pennsylvania furniture studio since her father’s death in 1990. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The select 25-lot auction is led by a dining table set in the Conoid style, first developed in 1957, which helped establish the Nakashima studio as a premier destination for American design. It carries an estimate of $30,000-$50,000. The sale highlights several other coveted Conoid works, including a desk and bench, as well as a fine Minguren I coffee table with an estimate of $20,000-$30,000.

Freeman’s is well known for its high-achieving auctions of Nakashima furniture. The $150,000 sale of an exceptional Holtz table and set of eight Conoid chairs broke a world auction record for a work by Mira Nakashima in 2018, and Freeman’s has sold the most valuable work by George Nakashima to appear at auction in four of the last five years.

About George Nakashima, Woodworkers
In the 1940s, architect and woodworker George Nakashima settled in New Hope, Pennsylvania, and established what was to become one of the most esteemed furniture studios in the country. Rooted in deep respect for the natural world and manual craftsmanship, the studio has produced iconic and utilitarian designs for nearly 80 years.

Reflecting on the firm’s ethos, Mira said, “Each tree not only has a different size and shape, but color and character, and each board from each tree has a distinctly different personality.” With this careful philosophy at the heart of the studio’s production, Mira carries on her father’s legacy to this day and continues to innovate.
