BUFORD, Ga. – Slotin Auction, specializing in self-taught artists, is also the premier auction house for bringing the strange, the unusual and the vanishing America to the block. The Nov. 12-13 auction is sure to pique the interest in any collector looking for exceptional examples by important artists as well as new discoveries. Slotin’s two-day Fall Masterpiece Sale features 1,121 lots of the best in self-taught, outsider and folk art, rare Southern folk pottery, circus and carnival items.

Fantastic examples to be presented from the estate of noted folklorist Dr. Gladys Marie Fry and the lifetime collection of Stella and Herbert Albin. Categories represented include European Art Brut, tramp art, religious banners and artwork, African American quilts, international folk art, trade signs, Chinese art and carvings, Native American objects, erotica, WPA-era artworks, canes, vernacular photography and anonymous works.

Watch for lot 167, Bill Traylor’s Purple And Green Man With Umbrella (above; est. $60,000-$70,000), and a prime example by Martin Ramirez, Lot 172, Caballero (below; est. $15,000-$20,000).

Another highlight is lot 176. Ellis Ruley’s, Hippos (below) from the 1950s, is illustrated in the definitive guide, Discovering Ellis Ruley, by Glenn Robert Smith and is widely exhibited (est. $12,000-$16,000).

For followers of Clementine Hunter are some of the most important and highly anticipated works as well as rare memorabilia and ephemera from Gladys Fry estate.

Southern Folk Pottery will open the sale with 114 strong examples. Six rare works by Arie and Cheever Meaders, lots 67-75, will warm up the crowd. An exquisite Gap Rock Tooth Devil With Scar by Lanier Meaders will follow (est. $2,000-$3,000). A fine example of Slave Dave pottery (below), signed in script, “L.M,” should really steal the show (est. $10,000-15,000).

In addition to the self-taught art masterpieces, bidders will find many hidden gems in this sale. An amazing collection of circus and carnival banners and artworks will be included in this sale from the R.G. Wandrey Family Circus, notably a carousel dragon chair side from the Carmel Company (lot 133. est. $4,000-$8,000), and a Fred Johnson side show banner, Calf With Two Heads, (lot 124, est. $2,000-$4,000).
