NEW YORK – More than 60 lots of original photographs will be offered in a fine art auction presented by Jasper52 on Wednesday, Aug. 22. The featured artist is British photographer John Stoddart, who has taken scores of photographs of famous faces. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Stoddart was born in Liverpool and is a former Grenadier Guard. He is based in Whitstable but often works in London. A self-taught photographer, Stoddart has been in the business for over 25 years. Stoddart’s clients have included EMI, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times, Vogue and Virgin.

He is best known for having taken scores of photographs of famous faces including Pierce Brosnan, Carla Bruni, Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, Jude Law, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Catherine Zeta-Jones (above). An enlargement of a contact sheet showing the Welsh actress dancing at the Dorchester Hotel in London in 2002 is expected to attract the top bid of the auction: $2,000-$2,500. The 40-inch by 30-inch signed print is from an edition of 20.

Hollywood icon Joan Collins is the subject of another Stoddart portrait (below), this one a color enlargement on archival rag paper. The signed print from an edition of 25 has a $1,000-$1,200 estimate.

Stoddart has also photographed many of the legends of rock ’n’ roll. Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page and Robert Plant (below) are the subjects of a silver gelatin print from an edition of 20.

A pair of 1970s portraits of young women from the 1970s by Antonin Novy (Czechoslovakian, b. 1944) comprise a single lot in the Jasper52 auction. Born in Prague in 1944, Novy began taking pictures when he was 19 and later worked as a picture editor for the Czechoslovakian news agency, Ceteka. Since then, he has made his living as a news photographer and documentary-film cameraman.
