NEW YORK – Murder, mystery, suspense and voluptuous blondes are at the head of a Jasper52 online auction of movie poster and memorabilia auction taking place Tuesday, Sept. 3. The opening attraction is a one sheet poster for the 1953 feature Niagara starring Marilyn Monroe. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.
“The film boasts two scenic marvels, Niagara Falls and M.M. in various states of undress. Steamy tail of a faithless wife (Monroe) who wants to do away with her jealous hubby,” according to Movies on TV and Videocassette by Steven H. Scheuer. The poster (above) is in very good condition with touch-ups noted. It displays rich color and the reclining full-length image of Monroe as part of the famous waterfalls existing as a veritable force of nature.
Science fiction fans will appreciate the poster for the 1957 classic The Incredible Shrinking Man, which depicts a scary encounter with a house cat (below). When Scott Carey begins to shrink because of exposure to a combination of radiation and insecticide, medical science is powerless to help him.
Alfred Hitchcock’s first American film, Rebecca, won Oscars for Best Picture and Cinematography (George Barnes) in 1940. A half sheet poster (22 by 28 inches) for the movie displays rich color and classic portrait artwork featuring stars Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Some touch-ups and repair are noted on this rare poster.
A one sheet poster for the 1950 film noir classic D.O.A. depicts the stricken star Edmond O’Brien in his desperate quest to find who has given him a slow-acting poison – and why. This 27-by-41-inch poster is in very good condition with touch-ups and minor issues noted.
The golden age of Hollywood is reflected in the flaxen tresses of the sultry 1940s star Veronica Lake. Photographer George Hurrell is credited with creating the glamor image of Hollywood through his lush and beautifully illuminated portraits of film and music stars. The 16-by-20-inch black and white enlargement of Lake is from a portfolio he released from 1979-1982.
The 250-lot auction also includes original posters for foreign films, travel and product advertising.
The Jasper52 auction will begin Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. Eastern Time.
