CLINTONDALE, N.Y. – From the ancient temples of Nepal, the hunt of the English landscape, and Rudyard Kipling’s world of children’s illustrations, the psychedelic head shop of the streets and the pendulum of time will swing through Kensington Estate Auctions’ Aug. 6 on-line estates auction. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
The top estimate in the auction goes to one of the three works by street artist LA II. Seldom does art of this size and quality by LA II become available for sale. His large canvas tagged throughout ‘LAROCK’ is expected to sell for $1,000-$2,000. LA II is one of the last remaining New York City graffiti artists from the ’70s-’80s era associated with Richard Hambleton, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
Highlighting other art offerings will include a James Daugherty abstract painting, a Beni Montresor Cinderella illustration, a Carl Mutze landscape, a Robert Draper Navajo painting, a Ben Essenburg painting, a Gretchen Dow Simpson New Yorker cover art, a Harley Brown illustration, a Serafin Serna painting, a Mila von Luttich watercolor, a collection of 19th-century fox hunting paintings from the Boydell Gallery of Liverpool, and a three-dimensional wood panorama by Robert Williams,1932.
Kensington Estate Auctions’ continuing offering of the works of Maurice Sendak will include signed art and books from the Juniper Tree, a rare puzzle from Where The Wild Things Are, complete prepublication proof sheets for his book Outside Over There and others. Arnold Lobel drawing from his Frog & Toad books will be included. In addition, children’s illustration offerings will include Rudyard Kipling’s book The Elephant Child with original illustrations by Krystyna Turska.
Autographs will include Jackie Kennedy, letters from Princess Margaret from Kensington and Buckingham palaces; several Federico Fellini signed letters, and letters from John Gielgud, Paul Newman, Lady Bird Johnson and Vice President Richard M. Nixon.
On a more classical Kensington Estate Auctions will sell a collection of salt-glazed American stoneware, a Chelsea Mariner bell clock, Reed & Barton sterling silver, George Jensen sterling, a Herend Hungarian tea set, Legras French cameo art glass and an A. Poole domed clock.
Mid-century modern highlights include a pair of Walter von Nessen Chase bookends.
Superheroes are characterized by the works of Alex Saviuk. Other urban artists of note will be included.
Kensington Estate Auctions will sell treasures from across the globe including a Buddhist temple elephant bell, American Indian rugs, a Chinese dragon necklace and European carved architectural winged griffins.
The auction catalog also contains antiquarian books from the 18th and 19th centuries, large stamp collections, comic books, and a World War II bond poster.
