ST. MICHAELS, Md. — For collectors and sporting enthusiasts, there is no better time of the year than autumn, when duck season commences. Following tradition, Guyette & Deeter have announced its Annual Fall Auction, held in association with the Easton (Maryland) Waterfowl Festival, for Saturday, November 11 and Sunday, November 12. The catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Day 1, Day 2).
Decoys and carved artworks reign at this event, with hundreds of examples from the earliest days to contemporary designs available. This sleeping mallard drake made in 1948 by the Ward Brothers was likely the exact item that catapulted them to eternal decoy fame. The lot showcases a drake with his beak tucked for a snooze, which earned top honors, and it also includes a ribbon and a sterling silver plate engraved ‘Best in Show 1948, National Decoy Makers Contest, National Sportsman Show, New York City. Presented by R.J. Schaffer to LT Ward’. Carved from balsa with an inserted hardwood tail and carved pine head, the complete lot is estimated at $35,000-$75,000.
An early and outstanding example of decoy artistry, this mallard drake was carved and painted by John English of Florence, New Jersey, some time in the late 19th century. Formerly on display in an East Coast museum, it was recently deaccessioned and is now making its way to market. It is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.
Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) was a hunter, painter and master decoy carver from Massachusetts whose early output is coveted by collectors. This pair of decorative bluebills with chicks are in original condition with minor flaking, and are modeled at two-thirds the size of mature birds. The complete lot is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.
Green-winged teal are the smallest dabbling ducks in North America. The drake and hen pair by Charles Bergman of Astoria, Oregon – a well-known carver who has had many items appear at auction – date to the second quarter of the 20th century. With minor wear from field use, the set is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.
