PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – On Jan. 22, Freeman’s will hold its inaugural sale at its new location at 1600 West Girard, showcasing a unique auction of Decorative Arts & Design @1600. With over 150 lots, the sale will primarily feature French furniture and glass from two prominent, private United States collections, including numerous pieces by Louis Majorelle and Emile Galle. Featured as well will be works by Tiffany, including pottery, glass and lighting. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

Highlights will include a Majorelle dining table once owned by Barbara Streisand (below; $6,000-$9,000), and a Majorelle five-piece salon suite, circa 1900, comprising a settee, pair of armchairs, and pair of side chairs (Lot 39; $8,000-12,000). In addition, a “La Coupe Fleurie” night light, made in France circa 1923 by Gabriel Argy-Rousseau will be offered (Lot 28; $3,000-$5,000).

The auction will also present one of the largest groups of Kayserzinn pewter ever assembled, hailing from the Collection of Rudolf Ammann (1937-2019). Ammann was a successful Wall Street export broker who had a passion for “fin de siècle” pewter. Emblematic of the German Jugendstil or “Jugend style,”

Kayserzinn worked with leading design talents including Carl Geyer, Hugo Leven and Hermann Fauser to offer fantastic, artistically emboldened designs to a burgeoning middle class. From October 12, 1989–January 9, 1990, the Museum of Modern Art staged the first American exhibition recognizing Kayserzinn’s contributions to the cannon of Art and Design. Several pieces lent to that exhibition, from the Collection of Rudolf Ammann, will be offered in this sale. Among the many noteworthy lots by Kayserzinn to be auctioned are a pewter lamp base, circa 1903-04 (Lot 89; $400-$600) and a pair of pewter “Bat” candelabra, 1901-1902, crafted with a design attributed to Hugo Leven (Lot 100; $600-$800).
