NEW YORK – On Tuesday, February 7, beginning at 5 pm Eastern time, Jasper52 will present a sale of Exquisite Fine Art Paintings and Prints. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The 181 lots in the February 7 sale deliver a generous and tempting range of subject matter as well as dozens of examples of bold colors, masterfully deployed. A small group of French Surrealist works, each offered individually, stands out from the pack. Among these, an oversize 1972 figurative painting of male bikers in the desert sticks in the memory.

The portrait selection includes a 1940 image of the actor Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. by Tino Costa, painted when the sitter was 30 years old; a mid-20th-century portrait by Frances Mabel Hollams of a horse named Gay Boy, set against a vibrant yellow backdrop; and an 18th-century French School portrait of an aristocratic young woman clad in silk finery who looks directly at the viewer and clearly finds them wanting.

Also notable is a pair of circa-1970s portraits, apparently painted in Tanzania, of an African man and an African woman. Offered separately, the man looks to the right and the woman looks to the left. The artist and the sitters are, sadly, unknown.

Equally worthy of mention are E. Johnson’s circa-1951 mountainscape of the British Lake District region of Cumberland that deftly reduces the peaks to tranches of green and white; and an enchanting and massive French School oil on canvas dubbed Sunny Landscape with Elegant Figures and Parasols, populated with women clad in solid-color dresses painted in shades of twilight blue, blaze orange and pearl gray.

Among the highlights is Yvette Dubois-Habasque’s (1929-2016) Abstract Composition, a 2009 oil on board estimated at $1,000-$1,200. The French expressionist rendered the modestly-sized work in black, silvery grays and touches of yellow gold.

Another abstract on offer with a similar title, an identical estimate, and created by a French artist is a circa-200os oil on canvas by Rene Leroy (b. 1932-). He allows forceful yellows and ochres to dominate the composition.

The final highlight represents a stark contrast to the other two. Denis Thornton’s (Irish, 1937-1999) The Annalong River, Binnian Mountain, County Down, Ireland is a breathtaking and realistic undated oil painting bearing an estimate of $3,500-$4,000.
