Friendly waters await Hockney print at Hindman, May 12
CHICAGO – Hindman’s May 12 Prints & Multiples auction will include a remarkable session of modern and contemporary master prints, led by a stellar David Hockney work. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
David Hockney’s Lithograph of Water Made of Lines, from his most sought-after series of prints, was created at the pinnacle of his print-making career and serves as an anchor to the session that heavily features American and British Pop Art. It appears in the sale as lot 77 and carries an estimate of $50,000-$70,000.
Dorothea Lange’s iconic photograph Migrant Mother, Nipomo California, dating to 1936, will be the focal point of the photography session. Among the most recognized images in the history of photography, this work has been reproduced countlessly, but only recently has the real story of this iconic image come to light, inspiring everything from History Channel specials to museum exhibitions attempting to unravel the mystery of the seemingly simple image. It is estimated at $50,000-$70,000.
Additional highlights from the auction include prints by Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Frank Stella, Robert Motherwell, Helen Frankenthaler, Jackson Pollock, Louise Nevelson, Francis Bacon, Alex Katz and Roy Lichtenstein. Significant collections to be offered include property from the estate of Richard Altermann of Santa Fe, New Mexico; the JFM Foundation collection of Denver, Colorado; and the estate of Leona Chanin.
