Furniture, Chinese jewelry prized in Leighton sale March 5

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Leighton Galleries’ March 5 auction will highlight a fine collection of English and American period furniture and an estate collection of Chinese jewelry on March 5. In addition, a large selection of fine silver, listed works, decorative arts and fine jewelry will be offered.

A single-owner collection of fine English period furniture will include a circa 1760 Irish mahogany secretary bookcase (est. $8,000-$12,000), a circa 1780 George III mahogany chest on chest (est. $1,200-$1,800), a circa 1700 William & Mary mahogany lowboy (est. $600-$800), a circa 1760 English marquetry inlaid corner chair (est. $300-$500), a George III oak tall case clock (est. $800-$1,200), a circa 1780 George III oak hunt board (est. $800-$1,200), a circa 1830 Georgian inlaid oak welsh dresser (est. $1,500-$2,500), a circa 1760 George III Chippendale mahogany card table (est. $500-$700), a circa 1770 Georgian Chippendale mahogany bookcase cabinet (est. $800-$1,200), a circa 1860 English George II-style yew wood desk (est. $800-$1,200), and a circa 1740 George II mahogany foldover tea table (est. $600-$800).

An estate collection of more than Chinese jewelry lots will also be presented in the sale. Among the offerings will be a group of amber beads including antique, natural and butterscotch examples, several jade and jadeite beaded necklaces, Shou necklaces, and other jewelry including enamels, Peking glass, carved seed, coral, cinnabar, horn, and other natural stone pieces. A nice collection of fine jewelry to be offered includes a men’s Tiffany & Co. 18K Tesoro wristwatch (est. $5,000-$7,000), a Cartier 18K turquoise bracelet (est. $4,000-$5,000), a ruby and sapphire 18K bracelet (est. $3,000-$3,500), a Victorian enamel and ruby snake bangle (est. $3,000-$5,000), a 61gm 18K gold choker necklace (est. $1,300-$1,500), a men’s Rolex Datejust stainless and gold watch (est. $1,200-$1,500), a diamond pendant necklace (est. $800-$1,200), a 58gm gold belcher link watch chain (est. $900-$1,000), and a men’s Jules Jurgensen gold bracelet watch (est. $800-$1,000).

Listed works will include a large tempera painting dated 1938 by Vilmos Aba-Novak (Hungarian, 1894-1941) depicting a Hungarian festival (est. $10,000-$15,000). Other artworks to be offered include a landscape painting by Narcisse-Virgil Diaz de da Pena (est. $2,500-$3,500), a Walter J. Watson oil titled On the Glaslyn, NW (est. $500-$700), a watercolor by Scottish artist David West titled Approaching Shore (est. $800-$1,200), a European school Orientalist painting of two women in an interior (est. $2,000-$2,500), a Louis Icart etching with aquatint Love’s Blossom (est. $800-$1,000), a Peter Max lithograph From The Beginning (est. $300-$350), Paul Jacoulet woodblocks and more.

Heading up the silver in the sale are several flatware sets including 134-piece Crown Baroque by Gorman (est. $2,000-$2,500), 143-piece Mount Vernon by Rogers, Lunt & Bowlen (est. $1,600-$1,800), 75-piece Lansdowne by Gorham (est. $800-$1,000), 72-piece Dancing Flowers by Reed & Barton (est. $700-$900), 54-piece Gossamer by Gorham (est. $700-$900), 54-piece Milburn Rose by Westmorland (est. $600-$800), and a 39-piece Bavarian service by Gebruder Reiner (est. $500-$700). Other silver to cross the block includes a pair of Austrian-Hungary five-light candelabra with putti figural standards (est. $1,500-$1,800), a Tiffany & Co. eggcup holder (est. $800-$1,200), a large Whiting footed center bowl (est. $700-$800), a Tiffany & Co. makers clover bowl (est. $500-$700), and several assorted hollowware and flatware groups.
