HOUSTON – Revolving Vault Auction & Estate Services will hold their second auction, titled “Truly Unique Holiday Gifts,” on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4 p.m. CST (2 p.m. Pacific). The Revolving Vault has chosen this unconventional start time to introduce new auction buyers to their eclectic array of items from around the world. Almost all of their pieces are one of a kind and are sure to tempt those searching for the unique, the collectible and the beautiful. This auction’s offerings will include more than 450 lots, including fine art, jewelry, crystal, accessories, as well as a vast assortment of collectibles featuring militaria, sports memorabilia and pop culture.
The “Truly Unique Holiday Gifts” auction will include an array of fine art including abstract, expressionism, pop culture art, Native-American, realism, photography and animation from artists including Michael Macedo Meazell, Jim Hudek, Juan Carlos Breceda, Blake Ballard and Brody Neuenschwander, to name a few.
Michael Macedo Meazell is a prominent Houston artist that creates work, which combines elements of assemblage and collage with digital technologies. His techniques are changing the art world’s idea of mixed media. Using found objects, the artist creates digital collages by layering manipulated computer scans, then outputting onto aluminium panels to which he later adds paint by hand. This auction features both King Kong and Spaceship (estimate: $7,000-$9,000).
Jim Hudek is a Houston artist who is quickly gaining a devoted following to his abstract expressionist art. He is passionate about his work and feels it is representational of his other obsession, jazz music. The free style of jazz is an inspiration art form that he transcribes into a visual image. His abstract paintings and mixed-media are both included in the auction (estimate: $3,000-$5,000).
Juan Carlos Breceda was born in Rosario, Sinaloa, Mexico and studied at La Exmeralda, the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Carving, as well as the famous San Carlos Art School. Women and animals are the central theme in his work, which demonstrates intense color schemes and rough, brush strokes, discarding depth or perspective. The Revolving Vault features several items from its collection, including mixed media, watercolor and drawings (estimate: $900-$4,000).
Blake Ballard is an emerging mixed-media artist out of Atlanta who creates portraits of pop-culture icons and brings them to life through his crystal glitter technique. He has studied under the likes of Richard Rowley, a famous Hollywood abstract artist in the early 1980s. Ballard has been stunning audiences with his life-size icons including his work Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Michael Jackson (estimate: $2,500-$5,000), which will be up for bid Sunday. Marianne Levy’s work Monkey and Bite Me (est. $500-$750) will also be among the ranks of Blake Ballard. Her sculptures are an amazingly vivid mix of human, nature and animal imagery, which focus on gender, sexuality and re-appropriation of symbols and myths.
An expansive collection of Brody Neuenschwander work will also be present. He is an artist originally from Houston who currently resides in Bruges, Belgium. A graduate and scholar of Princeton, his background is in medieval manuscript illumination, calligraphy, text art and installation art. Neuenschwander began teaching calligraphy in Bruges in 1993 and has had an influence on calligraphers in the country ever since.
One of his pieces The Eyes Have It original has been featured in Le Jardin des Mots an artist book printed in Paris featuring the works of calligraphy artists. This piece is a collage of rice paper with antique documents on Rives BFK printmaking paper, Chinese ink, gouache and applied doll’s eyes. A signed print of this piece will be up for auction (estimate: $2,500-$3,500).
“We pride ourselves in carrying items that are distinctive, superior quality and collectible. It’s amazing to think of the journey that many of our pieces have experienced to get to our gallery. It’s difficult to select only a few items to feature,” said Tracie Martin, owner of The Revolving Vault.
The “Truly Unique Holiday Gifts” session will also host a large amount of militaria, including: Civil War-era black powder flasks and rare gunpowder tins, World War I and World War II trench art and authentic military helmets and uniforms, among others. These decorative sculptures are directly linked to historical battles and consist of materials such as artillery shells, casings and other materials. Included in this auction are sculptures, vases and candlesticks, which are sure to please any military collector. Also up for auction will also be an antique Winchester Model 600A 10-gauge signal/salute cannon (estimate: $1,500-$2,000) with ammunition included.
The auction will host many glass and pottery items. Among these items are famous names that include works by Fenton, Hull, Wedgwood, McCoy, Murano Glass, JW Fite, Indiana Heirloom, Waterford and Lalique. Carnival, hand-blown and Depression glass, as well as fine cut-crystal, antique stoneware, and hand-made pottery will also be sold. A highlight will be the antique weather vanes/lightning rods showcasing both glass and ceramic balls. These obscure articles of early Americana are one of the fastest growing collectibles in the country today. The release of Rod Krupka’s book, The Complete Book of Lightning Rod Balls in 1995 captured the decorative imagination of collectors and the hobby has spread – like lightning. Among the elite pottery world, it’s worthy to note that two stunning items of Teco, the American Terra Cotta Tile and Ceramic Co., will be featured in the auction: a matte green glaze buttressed bowl and rectangular lidded box (estimate: $2,000-$4,000).
Touch any woman’s heart with the array of discounted jewelry, watches and handbags, including a stunning 10.51-carat black and white diamond 14K gold ring (full GLA appraisal $13,000), a 26.13-carat sapphire and 1.66-carat diamond bracelet (full GLA Appraisal $25,000) and an Omega Constellation watch with mother of pearl face and diamondb (estimate: $2,000-$3,000). A vintage Chanel handbag with tassel and long strap is featured as well (estimate: $1,750-$3,500).
Men are not to be left out, however, as an assortment of timepieces and sports memorabilia are included. The auction features a Breitling Bentley Flying B watch (estimate: $12,000-$15,000) and 1940s man’s Rolex Oyster watch (est. $1,500- $3,000). The sports memorabilia collection is what legends are made of and include Jim Spence authenticated signatures from professional baseball players, golfers, U.S. presidents, and dignitaries such as Babe Ruth, Joe Dimaggio, Yogi Berra, President Dwight Eisenhower, President Gerald Ford, Duke of Windsor, Payne Stewart, Arnold Palmer and Lou Brock, among others.
