NEW YORK – Auctions at Showplace will present an exciting summer estate auction on Sunday, July 24. Its lineup will bring together 280 lots of fine art, decorative arts, furnishings, fine jewelry and luxury goods. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Fine art highlights include a collection of works by American painter Vaclav Vytlacil (1892-1984), led by Still Life with Apples, a Cubist abstract expressionist still life with fruit and a pitcher. The piece won the William H.R. French Memorial Gold Medal at the Forty Seventh Annual Show at the Chicago Art Institute in 1936, and it carries an estimate of $3,000-$5,000.

Also featured is a large painting of a blue vase on a table by French artist Jules Cavailles (1901-1977). Cavailles was a member of the 1935 French art group Peintres de la realite poetique. The signed and undated work, titled Le Vase Bleu, is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.

Fine furnishings on offer include a circa-1835 North German Neoclassical book-matched mahogany-veneered temple form desk-bureau, estimated at $2,000-$4,000. It boasts a brass-inlaid pedimented temple configuration containing a locking cabinet, which is flanked by galleries concealing two cabinets and two hidden spring-lock drawers above a flame mahogany roll-front desk that conceals a trompe l’oeil ebony and pearwood marquetry interior desk with hidden drawers and a writing slide.

The top prize in the jewelry selection is a signed 18K gold Modernist pendant by sculptor and architect Harry Abend, showcasing an amethyst cabochon. Its estimate is $1,500-$2,500. Other jewelry offerings include sculptural works by Tod Pardon and Earl Pardon.

Silver-seekers will delight in a George III sterling silver kettle with (possibly Victorian-era) ornate repousse decoration of flowers, foliage and scrolls centering a cartouche with the crest. The kettle has marks of Robert I, David II, and Samuel Hennell, London, 1802, with the George III head, and it weighs approximately 46.58 troy ounces. It is estimated at $1,000-$2,000.

Also of note is a circa-1885-1889 Louis Vuitton leather-covered trunk with original silk lining and two fitted storage compartments, the chest exterior monogrammed “H.A.J.” It also sports an interior label with London and Paris addresses and the number 36163 stamped to its underside. The antique trunk is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
