Gray’s proves Cleveland rocks with locally sourced art and prints, April 26

CLEVELAND – On Wednesday, April 26, Gray’s Auctioneers will present a Fine Art, Furniture and Decor sale. Consisting of 223 lots, it will feature works by James Massena March, Rockwell Kent and Bridget Riley, as well as carefully selected pieces of furniture, decorative arts and jewelry. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Headlining the sale are 21 lots of artwork by the Cleveland-born and -based artist James Massena March (1953-2021), several of which come from his estate. An especially strong entry is a colorful untitled, undated acrylic-on-board abstract diptych of monumental proportions. In full, the work measures 85in high and 120in wide, and it carries an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

Equally compelling are 31 lots associated with the Print Club of Cleveland, a 250-member group that holds the honor of being the oldest print club in the United States. Standouts produced at the behest of the club include Mountain Climber, a 1933 wood engraving by Rockwell Kent (American, 1882-1971) that was issued in a run of 235 plus 10. This example is signed in pencil at the lower right and is estimated at $1,500-$2,000.

Another of the Print Club of Cleveland pieces in the April 26 sale is Elapse, a 1982 silkscreen in colors by Bridget Riley (British, b. 1931-). Printed by Graham Henderson of London, it is from an edition of 260 and is signed and dated in pencil at the lower right. Its estimate is $5,000-$7,000. Other artists showcased by the Print Club of Cleveland whose prints are represented in the sale include Henri Matisse, Victor Vasarely, Walasse Ting and Lyonel Feininger.

Decorative arts choices are led by a selection of gilt wood mirrors that includes a Louis XVI-style example and one reflecting the Chinese Chippendale style, estimated at $600-$800 and $300-$500, respectively. Also of note is a 20th-century stained glass window that depicts the twin sisters Samkhat and Kharimat from the legends of Gizdhubar. Housed in an oak frame, the window is estimated at $800-$1,200.

Rounding out the sale lineup are handsome pieces of contemporary metal furniture, mid-century modern decorative objects, and also a 14K gold and gold-plated charm bracelet with 17 charms, with some taking the forms of a whistle, a fish, a turtle, a football, a calendar and the state of Connecticut. The charm bracelet is estimated at $1,500-$2,000.
