NEW YORK – Handcrafted tramp art boxes, collectible vintage signs, and attractively detailed wooden frames are just a few of the whimsical treasures offered in Jasper52’s October 1 Americana & Folk Art auction. The array of artisan-made objects vary from charming folk art painting to desirable ceramics and more formal types of Americana. A reflection of rural life in the United States during the 19th and 20th centuries, the featured collection of 385 lots offers many decorative opportunities for the home. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

One of the top-estimated items in the sale is a pieced, embroidered and painted award-winning quilt made by Clara Gindling of Castro California. Although it was made earlier, it was exhibited at the Alameda County (Calif.) Fair in 1949, the California State Fair in 1950, and other venues, taking several first-prize awards. The quilt’s 36 hand-painted blocks are vignettes of California history, embellished with quilting and embroidery to accentuate Gindling’s artistic impressions. Reflecting California’s nickname, the Golden State, the 80 by 96in quilt displays visuals in sunset colors with alternating green cotton broadcloth. The quilt is offered together with award ribbons and newspaper clipping’s documenting its history. The auction estimate is $5,500-$7,000.

Vintage tattoo art is a fast-rising category, both with collectors of folk art and pop culture memorabilia. Several excellent examples are entered in the sale, including a 1940s themed collection of images by artist Bill Moore, titled “The Ruin of Men.” [See image at top of page.] Originating at a Kansas tattoo parlor, it shows such tattoo-art options as “Woman as Seductress,” “Patriotic Eagle,” “Honor & Love,” and a skeleton on a dagger swirled with a banner that reads “Death Before Dishonor.” The framed artwork measures 11 by 14½ inches and is estimated at $450-$495.

A wonderful example of Pacific Northwest Native art, a monumental Yu’pik Eskimo beach-grass basket dates to circa 1900-1920. Unusually large at 25 inches long by 19 inches wide by 18 inches high, the lidded basked is decorated with finely detailed images of wolves and sea birds or ducks. This is the type of auction selection anyone would enjoy browsing. It’s filled with curiosities and nostalgic reminders of America’s past, from a boxed Hopalong Cassidy wristwatch to a pen wipe shaped as a brass lobster to a 1908 photograph of a little girl depositing a coin into a still bank – the type of go-with that bank collectors love.
