SAN FRANCISCO – Turner Auctions + Appraisals will present an auction titled The Jim Haas Native American Art Library and a Collection of Southwest Jewelry on Saturday, October 8, starting at 10:30 am Pacific time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

The Haas library section of the sale features in excess of 100 lots consisting of more than 900 books, catalogs and other publications on various Native American and Canadian First Peoples art styles and artifacts from the personal collection of Jim Haas. This noted, long-time specialist in Native American and Ethnographic Arts retired several years ago as director from Bonhams after 32 years with the company and its predecessor, Butterfields.

In addition, more than 30 lots of Southwestern bracelets, rings and necklaces are offered from various collectors and estates. Many of these are Old Pawn pieces – old, often Navajo-made jewelry that was traded for credit or goods. Rounding out the sale are several publications on other ethnic arts, including Pre-Columbian, Mexican and tribal.

Highlights from the upcoming sale include a copy of a revised 1971 edition of Harold L. Peterson’s American Indian Tomahawks, in Very Good condition and featuring the owner’s signature. It is estimated at $200-$300.

Old Pawn jewelry on offer includes a turquoise and silver Navajo cuff bracelet, which measures seven inches, including the additional wrist gap, estimated at $200-$400; and a miscellaneous grouping of eight silver and turquoise Navajo rings. The rings’ sizes range from approximately sizes 5, 7, 8 1/2 and 10, and they carry a collective estimate of $200-$300.

Lot 26 consists of four books on Northwest Coast art. The group includes Daina Augatis’s Raven Travelling, Two Centuries of Haida Art; Steven C. Brown’s Native Visions, Evolution in Northwest Coast Art from the Eighteenth through the Twentieth Century; Paz Cabello’s Spirits of the Water, Native Art Collected on Expeditions to Alaska and British Columbia, 1774-1910; and George F. MacDonald’s Haida Art. The conditions of the four books range from Good to Very Good, and are together estimated at $100-$150.

Another strong entry from the books category is a 2008 first edition of The Pottery of Zuni Pueblo by Dwight P. Lanmon and Francis H. Harlow, which is signed by Lanmon. It is in Good-Very Good condition and is estimated at $200-$300.
