PHILADELPHIA — Henry Moore’s evocative, energetic bronze Architectural Project leads Freeman’s May 11 Modern and Contemporary Art auction. Offered at an estimate of $200,000-$300,000, the elegant work, dating to 1969 and stamp-numbered 8/12 on its base, highlights the maturity and life force of the eminent British artist’s later work and represents an unmissable addition to serious contemporary art collections. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Building on notable 2021 sale successes, the upcoming Modern and Contemporary Art auction presents buyers with opportunities to collect Moutons de Pierre, playful sheep sculptures by the late French designer and artist Francois-Xavier Lalanne. Appearing as lots 30 and 31 in the May 11 auction, each is offered individually and both are estimated at $100,000-$150,000.

From Alexander Calder and David Hockney to Romare Bearden and Christo, the sale lineup offers a fine selection of some of the most important figures in 20th- and 21st-century painting and sculpture.

A surreal landscape by Yves Tanguy — Composition Surrealiste, estimated at $80,000-$120,000 — heads off the sale’s modern art selection, whereas later works like Andy Warhol’s explosive, energetic Vesuvius screenprint, which carries an estimate of $50,000-$80,000, and Kikuo Saito’s Ika-Luga, estimated at $30,000-$50,000, round out the 20th century. Representing the 21st century is the auction’s final lot, Neon Rolling Stones Tongue by RISK, which is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Freeman’s Modern and Contemporary Art department alone has realized many of the house’s most exciting and successful sales during the past year, from a $1.8 million result across 54 lots in May 2021 to a remarkable $2.1 million for a fine selection of sculpture by Francois-Xavier Lalanne from a prominent Washington, D.C. family in November 2021. With dynamic offerings from Joan Miro and Pablo Picasso to Harry Bertoia and Josef Albers, Freeman’s ongoing series of Modern and Contemporary Art sales are poised to continue building this track record with impressive results.
