DALLAS – The 9K gold center bowl presented to Queen Elizabeth II’s grandparents, the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, could bring $80,000 or more in Heritage Auctions’ Fine Silver & Objects of Vertu Auction on May 5. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
The waisted, ovoid bowl by Rattray & Co. (above) was presented to the Earl and Countess of Strathmore, parents to Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Queen Consort to George VI of England and Queen Mother to Elizabeth II, Sept. 30, 1931, at their home, Glamis Castle, by a deputation of the city of Dundee in honor of their golden wedding anniversary.
“We are pleased to offer this historically significant Rattray & Co. presentation bowl,” said Karen Rigdon, Heritage Auctions’ silver and decorative arts director. “This gift celebrating family is all the more meaningful, using Celtic motifs of dragons and knots reflecting the family’s Scottish heritage.”
A Hermann Ratzersdorfer gem-set, partial gilt, and enameled silver-mounted and engraved rock crystal figural tazza, Vienna, circa 1880 (estimate: $30,000-$50,000) comes from an important estate in Akron, Ohio. The tazza (below) features an enameled cast satyr figure based on a print by Cornelis Floris. Resting on his head is a spade-form rock crystal bowl engraved with scrolled foliage and set in silver mounts with grotesque masques and a dragon-form handle with outstretched wings and a meandering tail, all enhanced with white, red and green enamel.
From a New York City estate, a pair of Tiffany & Co. 14K gold candlesticks, New York, circa 1948 (estimate: $30,000-$50,000) was commissioned by a New York City industrialist who gave them to his wife in 1948 as a birthday gift. Each candlestick is monogram “BJC” and to the underside inscribed “March 16, 1948.”
The same New York industrialist also commissioned a Tiffany & Co. 14K gold center bowl (estimate: $30,000-$50,000).
Crowning an extensive collection of Maison Cardeilhac silver is a 287-piece silver flatware service, Paris, late 19th century (estimate: $15,000-$25,000) is a beautiful set with a cumulative weight of 294.22 troy ounces.
Following the successful introduction of silver masterworks by Peruvian Italian silversmith Graziella Laffi in November, Heritage is presenting 14 lots focusing on her jewelry designs.

– A 190-piece Tiffany & Co. Chrysanthemum pattern silver flatware service for 22, New York, designed in 1880 (estimate: $10,000-$15,000).
– A Gorham Mfg. Co. enameled silver trophy made for Fenimore Country Club’s Samuel Kronsky Championship, Providence, Rhode Island, circa 1935 (estimate: $8,000-$12,000). The Samuel Kronsky Championship Trophy was commissioned by the Fenimore Country Club, referencing James Fenimore Cooper’s well-known tale The Last of the Mohicans. Sitting on the base are figures of the hunter and scout Hawkeye and Uncas, the last member of the Mohican tribe.
– A pair of monumental Continental silver hot water urns, probably Italy, late 20th century (estimate: $7,000-$9,000).
– A five-piece Gorham Mfg. Co. martelé partial gilt silver tea and coffee service, Providence, Rhode Island, 1906 (estimate: $7,000-$9,000).
– A six-piece Tiffany & Co. repoussé silver tea service in the Persian taste, New York, 1874-1891 (estimate: $7,000-$9,000).
– A 60-piece group of Olle Johanson silver table items commissioned by the American Culinary Federation, Pawtucket, Rhode Island, 2008 (estimate: $3,000-$5,000). This collection was commissioned by the American Culinary Federation for its entries to Bocuse D’Or in 2013 and the 2014 Culinary World Cup in Luxembourg, known as the culinary Olympics.
