MUNICH, Germany – The stage is set and the curtain is about to rise on Hermann Historica‘s Saturday, May 6 auction, titled Works of Art, Antiques, Ancient and Asian Art and featuring just under 750 lots. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Three ancient pieces command attention in the military headgear section. The Corinthian helmet is widely viewed as the epitome of Greek helmets. Its severe lines and clearly structured form give it a particularly formidable appearance. Estimated at €38,000-€76,000, lot number 16 is a splendid example of the third development stage Corinthian helmet with features of the Lamia group. Dating from the last third of the 6th or the early 5th century B.C., this ancient helmet is in exceptionally good condition.

In addition, two unequaled artifacts from the Roman Empire would take pride of place in any museum. The first is a bronze helmet of the Niederbieber type, dating from the 3rd century A.D. and with a skull that has been hammered in one piece. The second is a crest helmet in iron with its associated shield boss, estimated at €35,000-€70,000.

A large, celadon-glazed vase from China should attract much attention. Probably made in the 19th century, the piece is embellished with geometric motifs and stylized foliage in relief. It is estimated at €2,000-€4,000.

The art and antiques selection boasts a wealth of superb objects. Among the religious works of art, a graceful coral statue of the Virgin Mary will delight bidders. Made in Trapani, Italy, the figure’s naturalistic expression and the folds of the robes wrought in detail advertise the talent of the carver. The piece carries an estimate of €9,500-€19,000. Another standout is a tall silver figure of St. Anthony of Padua, probably designed by master craftsman Friedrich II Schwestermuller of Augsburg. It is estimated at €14,000-€28,000.

Lot 593 would take pride of place in any living room. The late 16th-century Renaissance cabinet from Innsbruck is an enthusiast’s dream come true. It is adorned with marquetry in a variety of woods, depicting magnificent hunting scenes. The interior is fitted with 12 drawers and brass handles, flanking the central double doors, behind which an open compartment is hidden away, with three secret drawers on each side. Complete with its two original keys, the cabinet is estimated at €12,000-€24,000.

Completing the highlights is a collection of large bowls and saucepans, frying pans and baking dishes, traditional Bundt pans and casseroles that is sure to cause a flurry of excitement. Made of gleaming copper, the cooking utensils came from Marienburg Castle near Hanover, which seems to have been lifted straight from the pages of a fairy tale. The cookwares’ low estimates range from €400 euros to €2,800.
