CHICAGO – Hindman‘s May 3 auction of American and European art delivers a delightful and invigorating lineup of paintings, sculptures, and other works from a wide range of American and European artists — some well-known, and some that deserve to be better known. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
An oil-on-canvas by the influential Pennsylvania Impressionist artist Daniel Garber stands out from an already strong roster. Near Solebury, 1917 (shown at top) is a powerful example of his early-20th-century style and displays exquisite and subtle mastery of color. The Garber painting carries an estimate of $70,000-$90,000.
Les Deux Amies (The two friends), a beguiling 1957 canvas by the French-Japanese artist Leonard Tsuguharu Foujita, is estimated at $150,000-$250,000. Though it depicts two young girls, Foujita keeps the oil-and-ink image entirely free of any saccharine qualities and even comes off as a tad unsettling; each child seems to be in her own world.
Jets d’eau sur le ciel (Jets of water against the sky), a 1937 painting by Henri Le Sidaner, could sell for $60,000-$80,000. Its cool palette, dominated by shades of white and mint greens, relays a forcefully vertical image of pale, slim trees.
Alphonse Mucha’s stunning 1920 oil on canvas titled Woman with Flowering Branches is accompanied by a certificate from the Mucha Foundation and has an estimate of $60,000-$80,000. The painting comes from the Estate of Avis Hope Truska, Scottsdale, Arizona.
The Gaston Lachaise bronze Woman on Divan, also known as Woman on Sofa and Woman on Couch, is estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Conceived circa 1919 and revised during the 1920s, it was cast posthumously in 1979 in an edition of 11, and bears a stamp from the Lachaise estate.
Other notable works by American artists in the May 3 sale include Cows Grazing, an undated, expertly-colored Lawrence Lebduska canvas bound to provoke a smile and estimated at $3,000-$5,000; Robert Vickrey’s 1987 egg tempera on gesso panel, Nun and Monarch, estimated at $3,000-$5,000; and a 1967 jungle-theme painting by Orville Bulman, estimated at $20,000-$30,000.
