CHICAGO – A quintessential Henry Moore bronze Reclining Figure sculpture will take center stage at Hindman, highlighting an exceptional offering of sculptures in the firm’s Post-War & Contemporary Art auction on Wednesday, December 14 and its Prints & Multiples auction on Thursday, December 15. Abstract paintings by Alice Baber, Gene Davis, Brice Marden, Paul Jenkins and Frank Stella will also be among the lots. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
The Henry Moore bronze sculpture, Reclining Figure from 1957, is estimated at $600,000-$800,000. It comes from the collection of Leonard and Joan Horvitz of Moreland Hills, Ohio, and is a focal point of the December 14 Post-War & Contemporary Art auction. Renowned for his bronzes, Reclining Figure is one of only 12 plus one casts of this sculpture and reflects Moore’s mature style, which incorporates universalism and the balance of form and space.
“Henry Moore’s dynamic bronze Reclining Figure, 1957 checks all the visual boxes of what you want from one of the most important and influential sculptors of the 20th century,” said Hindman Director & Senior Specialist for Post-War & Contemporary Art Zack Wirsum. “This mid-sized example possesses all the majesty of his monumental works without requiring a sculpture garden for installation.”
Rounding out the notable group of bronze sculptures is Fernando Botero’s Ballerina, estimated at $200,000-$300,000. It is from the collection of Theodore H. and Sharon B. Pincus of Chicago, Illinois and is a fine representation of Botero’s distinctive style of volumetric, oversized shapes with unexpected shifts in scale. Additional sculpture highlights include Li Chen’s 2001 Landscape in Heaven, which is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.
For those seeking a more modern yet equally iconic work, Jeff Koons’ 2013 sculpture Dom Perignon Balloon Venus (Magenta) will be offered in the December 15 Prints & Multiples auction with an estimate of $40,000-$60,000. Celebrated for pieces that combine conceptualism with commercialism, Koons’ sculpture features his recognizable balloon formation and is inspired by Paleolithic sculptures of Venuses.
For collectors interested in abstract paintings, the Post-War & Contemporary Auction has no shortage of options. A pair of floral-inspired Joan Snyder works that appear as lot 45 and lot 46 in the December 14 sale lineup are among the most eye-catching. Works by Alice Baber, Gene Davis, Paul Jenkins, Kenzo Okada, Toshiko Takaezu and Larry Zox will also be offered.
Additional highlights in the December 15 Prints & Multiples auction include Frank Stella’s The Funeral (Dome) from the artist’s popular Moby Dick (Domes) series, which carries an estimate of $20,000-$40,000. Brice Marden’s Etchings to Rexroth, estimated at $20,000-$30,000, is a beautiful representation of the artist’s minimal line works.
Hindman has continually paced the market for works by the late Chicago Surrealist artist Gertrude Abercrombie and will present two more of her charming works in this sale. Gladys Nilsson, Jim Lutes, Richard Hunt, Ed Paschke, and Irving Petlin will also be among exceptional Chicagoans represented in the Post-War & Contemporary Art auction.
