CINCINNATI – Cowan’s Auctions Inc. will host their American History: Live Salesroom Auction on June 21. The auction will offer rare political campaign ephemera, photographs, daguerreotypes, books, manuscripts, Lincoln items, maps and Civil War collectibles. Featured in the sale will be the Histoire de Don Quichotte, Volumes I, II, IV, V and VI from Thomas Jefferson’s own library, estimated to sell anywhere between $40,000/60,000.

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

“As we approach the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the military heroes and political figures involved in this defining battle among so many other significant events of the Civil War are represented and celebrated in our June 21 American History auction,” notes Katie Horstman, director, American history department. “From the Tom MacDonald Collection of over 300 Maine Civil War CDVs, including portraits of Joshua and Thomas Chamberlain of the illustrious 20th Maine, to the exceptionally rare Gettysburg battlefield map prepared in 1863 by T. Ditterline, the moments and individuals involved in the Gettysburg campaign come alive through the offerings assembled here.”

Cowan’s June 21 sale will be offering a number of exceptional daguerreotypes. A half plate daguerreotype of a 49er mining scene is estimated at $15,000/25,000. Another gold rush half plate daguerreotype is expected to bring $15,000/25,000, and a stereodaguerreotype of Samuel Gilman Brown, president of Hamilton College, is expected to sell for $15,000/25,000.

Archives and manuscripts will also be featured in the auction. Peter Force’s copy of the Declaration of Independence is estimated to bring $12,000/16,000. Force was an archivist and historian who realized that most Americans, by the middle of the 19th century, had not seen or read important historic documents of the nation; so he planned an “American Archives” series to highlight all of the important documents. A rare Kentucky statehood broadside dated to 1791 is expected to sell for $8,000/10,000, and a Benedict Arnold letter to J. Thompson dated to 1780 is estimated at $5,000/7,000.

Rare maps are expected to garner high prices in the sale. An exceptionally rare Gettysburg battlefield map by T. Ditterline, 1863, is expected to bring anywhere between $6,000/8,000. Mitchell’s 1846 Reference and Distance Map of the United States by J.H. Young with inset maps of Texas, Oregon and California is estimated at $6,000/8,000.

Cowan’s will also offer historical flags in the June 21 auction. A previously unknown Clay and Frelinghuysen, The Same Old Coon 1844 presidential campaign flag is estimated to bring $10,000/15,000, a 39-star national parade flag with a triple medallion star pattern is expected to sell for $3,000/6,000, and a rare Civil War period 34-star national parade flag is also estimated at $3,000/6,000.

Other featured items in the sale include Mary Todd Lincoln’s mourning carriage parasol, veil and fan, estimated at $10,000/15,000. A Lewis half plate daguerreotype camera with a Jamin/Darlot lens is expected to fetch $8,000/10,000. A photograph of President Lincoln at the battlefield of Antietam by Alexander Gardner is estimated at $8,000/10,000, and a Sitting Bull signed business card is estimated at $3,000/5,000.
