Huge metal shark sculpture commands attention at Roland, Jan. 7
GLEN COVE, N.Y. – A monumental 18-foot-long shark sculpture by contemporary artist RISK (aka Kelly Graval) will take center stage at the first sale of 2023 presented by Roland Auctions NY, which will take place Saturday, January 7. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Estimated at $150,000-$200,000, Shark, made in 2018 from found metal objects, is one of the artist’s earliest Shark sculptures. It was first exhibited on the collector’s Long Island property, where it still stands. RISK rose to prominence in the late 1980s on the West Coast, becoming one of the first graffiti artists to break into the mainstream art world. Several years back, he debuted a series of sculptures called Face Your Fears, which included a limited number of variations on his Shark and Dolphin sculptures rendered in various metals.
Along with the sculpture by RISK, fine and contemporary art offerings in the January 7 sale will include a Jean Dufy (French, 1888-1964) oil-on-canvas painting titled Clown, which is signed at the lower left and estimated at $8,000-$12,000; a signed F. Rouboud oil on canvas of an Orientalist or Bedouin market street scene with a man on a horse, estimated at $5,000-$7,000; and a Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941-) two-piece purple sculpture with a green lip, titled Imperial Iris Persian and estimated at $4,500-$5,500.
Roland will also provide a strong Mid-century Modern furniture selection in the auction, including a Warren Platner for Knoll Throne lounge chair that has a molded shell seat over a steel rod cage base. Its estimate is $4,500-$6,500.
Also on offer is an Adrian Pearsall walnut Crescent lounge chair and ottoman with so-called “grasshopper” arc legs around the recently upholstered Hallingdal upholstery. It is rare for this piece to be offered with its ottoman. It has an estimate of $4,000-$5,000.
Rounding out the highlights is a Vladimir Kagan Art Deco-style chaise lounge. It sports barrel-tufted sections and asymmetrical arms, and is raised on an acrylic plank base. It carries an estimate of $4,500-$6,500.
