FRANKLIN, Mass. – A mixed media on paper of Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn Monroe image that’s attributed to the Pop Art master, and a lovely tempera and watercolor on paper landscape attributed to French artist Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875), are just two expected headliners in a fine art auction on Thursday, June 28, by In the Manner Of. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

It will be just the second auction for the firm dealing exclusively in antique and vintage artworks created in the styles of master artists (hence the name In the Manner Of) but, unlike the inaugural event, an online-only affair, this sale will have a live component. The preview auction and live event will be held in the recently opened 500 Gallery, at 500 Franklin Village Drive in Franklin.

“Our consignors have sent an amazing selection of paintings, many of which have been tucked away in portfolios for decades,” said Bruce Wood, co-founder of In the Manner Of. “We’re looking forward to presenting them in our first preview exhibition, followed by live bidding at 500 Gallery.” Previews will start on June 20; 500 Gallery is open Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday from 10-3.

The 166-lot auction is filled with paintings, drawings and prints attributed to, and done in the manner of, art world giants like Picasso, Warhol, Renoir, Degas, Monet, Motherwell, Basquait, Dali, Twombly, Modigliani, Appel, Sam Francis and many others.

Warhol’s Marilyn Monroe (above) is artist signed front and back and is verso stamped “Contemporary Masters Exhibition,” with a certificate of authenticity from the Galerie d’Art Internationale in Luxembourg. The 9½-inch by 8¼-inch work carries a reasonable estimate of $8,000-$10,000.

There are several other Warhol attributions in the auction. They include the following:

– Chanel No. 5 (Pink), a gouache and ink on paper, signed lower left and reverse and marked with a stamp from Wakefield Gallery verso, in a 20 ¼-inch by 17-inch frame. The painting, with a robust estimate of $30,000-$50,000, could end up being the top lot of the auction.

– Yellow Cow, a graphite and acrylic drawing, verso signed, stamped, marked with the Arthur Tooth Gallery (London, England), and reference numbers. The unframed painting measures 10¾ inches by 8 inches. It’s in very good condition and should gavel for $8,000-$12,000.

– Mount Vesuvius, a gouache and acrylic on paper, signed and unframed (7¾ inches by 10¾ inches), with the verso stamp of the Arthur Tooth Gallery in London and a certificate of authenticity from Gallery 64 (Belfast, Ireland). The painting is estimated at $6,000-$10,000.

The watercolor painting attributed to Corot is titled Landscape, Countryside (with figure in a boat). The 8-inch by 10¼-inch unframed work (below) is artist signed lower right. It comes with a certificate of examination and the reverse bears the Hotel Longchamp collector’s stamp (est. $5,000-$8,000).

An oil on canvas abstract composition done in the manner of Sam Francis (American, 1923-1994), artist signed installed on a new stretcher in a new white 23½-inch by 23¼ inch frame, should realize $25,000-$35,000; while an untitled (Female Nude) oil on canvas attributed to Karel Appel (Dutch, 1921-2006), artist signed and in a 25¾ inch by 21¾ inch frame, is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

An oil on canvas titled Portrait of a Woman, done in the manner of Amedeo Modigliani (It., 1884-1920), signed, framed and verso stamped Duret, with a COA from the van Hassel Galeri (Rotterdam, Holland), should achieve $15,000-$20,000. Also, a framed oil on board attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988) titled Samo, artist signed and titled, should command $10,000-$15,000.

A pair of untitled abstract compositions each carries an estimate of $8,000-$10,000. One is done in the manner of Paul Klee (Swiss, 1879-1940), an acrylic on canvas signed lower right and housed in a 20½-inch by 16½-inch frame. The other is an oil on canvas attributed to the Swedish artist and mystic Hilma af Klint (1862-1944), in very good condition and in a frame 25 inches by 19 inches.

Vase of Flowers, a tempera and oil on paper still-life work attributed to Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919), artist signed, with the verso stamp of Arthur Boudin and a COA from van Hassel Galeri, is expected to hit $10,000-$15,000; as is an untitled (Abstract Flower) oil on canvas painting done in the manner of Cy Twombly (American, 1928-2011), artist signed, in a 22¼-inch by 19½-inch frame.

A drawing on laid paper attributed to Pablo Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973), titled Bird, artist signed, dated 1950, contained in a 13¼-inch by 16½-inch frame that’s in better condition than the paper, should reach $6,000-$8,000; while a tempera on paper done in the manner of Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926), titled Terrace at St. Adresse, signed and unframed, is expected to fetch $5,000-$8,000.

In the Manner Of makes it clear that all the artworks in this and future sales are created in the styles of, after or attributed to master artists. Its mission is to offer fine artworks for collectors with sophisticated aesthetics. The pieces come with no provenance, no guarantees and no pedigrees.

The firm just announced it now accepts cryptocurrency.

“So many consignors have come to us with great paintings that were undocumented originals, tribute pieces or copies that we decided to feature them in their own online auctions,” said Bruce Wood, who founded In the Manner Of with partner William Janosco. “That’s how this auction house was born.”

In the Manner Of is seeking artworks that are created in the style of, after or attributed to master artists.
