JACKSON, Wyo. – Trailside Galleries and the Gerald Peters Gallery will to present the 14th annual Jackson Hole Art Auction, on Sept. 19, 2020 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. This year’s sale will be held virtually and live streamed from the Center for the Arts in downtown Jackson, with just over 300 lots on offer. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Leading the sale is an important historic work by Thomas Moran (above). Painted in 1905, Cascade Falls, Yosemite, is a 30¼-by-20 oil on canvas, which will be offered at $750,000-$1,250,000.
This year’s sale features an unprecedented number of works by members of the esteemed Cowboy Artists of America. Highlights include Howard Terpning’s It’s Been a Long Day, a 24-by-34 oil on canvas estimated at $200,000-$300,000. Fresh to the auction market, this piece (below) is a strong example of Terpning’s work.
Also of note is a significant collection of John Coleman bronzes from an important private collection. Chief among them is a life-size casting of 1876, Gall – Sitting Bull – Crazy Horse (bronze, 55 by 96 by 36 inches). A limited edition of five, this is the first time that this piece will be offered at auction.
The sale features numerous works by Martin Grelle, with Wedding Preparations (below) and Cheyenne Remnants (oil/canvas, 44 by 60 inches) both estimated at $150,000-$250,000.
Also on offer is Gordon Snidow’s Remnant of Another Time (oil/board, 48 by 36 inches) at $40,000-$60,000 and Bruce Greene’s The Wagon Fly Incident of ’98 (oil/canvas, 58 by 68 inches) at $30,000-$50,000.
Other important western highlights include works by Bill Owen, Bill Nebeker and Frank McCarthy.
Known for its wildlife offerings, the Jackson Hole Art Auction always includes the highest caliber of wildlife art, and this year’s sale is no exception. Included is an important oil by wildlife master, Carl Rungius titled Wyoming Elk (oil/canvas, 30 by 46¼ inches) which will be offered at $150,000-$250,000. Bob Kuhn is also well represented in the sale with Red Fox Airborne (acrylic/masonite, 16 by 26 inches) and A Cry to the Wild (acrylic and pencil/board, 14 by 29¾ inches) both estimated at $50,000-$75,000.
Specializing in Robert Bateman, the Jackson Hole Art Auction will offer Antarctic Evening – Humpback Whales (acrylic/canvas, 48 by 60 inches) at $50,000-$75,000.
The sale also features important wildlife offerings from John Clymer, Tucker Smith, Ken Carlson, Luke Frazier and Bonnie Marris, among others. Classic western and Taos Society works will also be presented at this year’s sale. Oscar Berninghaus’ The Lookout (oil/canvas, 24 by 30 inches) will be offered at $125,000-$175,000.
Multiple works by John Clymer will also be featured. In the Dead of Winter, a 24-by-36 oil on board, is estimated at $150,000-$250,000, while Hunting Country, a 10-by-20 oil on board, will be offered at $60,000-$90,000.
Additional works by Gerard Curtis Delano, Richard Lorenz, Victor Higgins, William Gollings, and Joseph Henry Sharp will also be on offer.
