NEW YORK – Dozens of handmade rugs in a variety of types and sizes will be offered for sale in a Jasper52 online auction Dec. 26. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

The auction will open with a big, beautiful semi-antique Persian Kashmar rug in the ZirKhaki pattern (above). Woven about 35 to 40 years ago in Iran, this masterpiece is composed of wool pile colored with all-natural dyes.

Tabriz rugs are made in and around the city of Tabriz in northwest Persia. Tabriz rugs are usually woven on cotton bases and have wool piles. One such an example is the room-size garden design Tabriz Pak Persian rug (below) in the Jasper52 auction. Made in Iran, it has 300 knots per square inch.

Persian Kashan rugs are found in a wide variety of patterns and color combinations and are made in both Iran and Pakistan. Kashan rugs are named after the Persian city of Kashan, where the design originated. These rugs usually contain a medallion on a Shah Abbas field – a series of curvilinear floral forms, creating a garden-like background. A fine semi-antique room-size Kashan rug in the Jasper52 auction is wool pile with a cotton base.

Mahal rugs, named after the city Mahallat in Southwestern Iran, have been made in several countries. The beautiful Indo-Mahal rug in the Jasper52 image is oversized – about 12 by 18 feet. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton base.

For a change of pace from traditional Persian rugs, the auction offers a nice selection of modern designs. Made in India, a room-size Nepali-style rug is based on a European design.

There was a high demand for Art Deco rugs in the mid-20th century. Many high-quality pieces were made in Turkey, such as the fine example in the Jasper52 auction (below).
