NEW YORK – Everything needed to outfit a home or office in sleek midcentury modern décor is offered in a Jasper52 online auction to be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 10. Italian designed furniture and futuristic lighting are featured in this 100-lot auction. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.
The Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1 into orbit on Oct. 4, 1957, triggering the Space Race. The historic event was also the inspiration of many similarly shaped light fixtures. While the real Sputnik 1 measured just 23 inches in diameter, the Sputnik-type brass fixture in the Jasper52 auction (above) has a whopping 60-inch diameter. It has 34 lights shooting from its brass core. This high-quality, handmade piece has a $4,000-$5,000 estimate.
From Italy’s Studio Le Opere e i Giorni is a Manta dining table having a polished teak top with circular glass inserts on an architectural base of sculpted fiberglass over metal. The table is handmade, signed and numbered (est. $7,000-$8,000).
Another outstanding piece in the auction is a credenza designed by Italian architect Giovanni Michelucci (1891-1990) and made by Poltronova, a semi-industrial producer of contemporary furniture. This wooden case measures 65 inches long and has a flip top that opens to reveal two spacious compartments over two drawers flanked by two doors (est. $3,000-$3,500).
Ample midcentury modern seating is offered in the auction such as a pair of Italian upholstered chairs having patinaed brass legs (est. $2,000-$2,500). A matching sofa is available as a separate lot.
Also offered are two George Nelson platform benches, one large and one small.
The Jasper52 auction of midcentury modern furniture and accessories will begin Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 9 p.m. Eastern Time.
