Jasper52 delivers fine paintings and prints, Aug. 9
NEW YORK – On Tuesday, August 9, starting at noon Eastern time, Jasper52 will offer a sale titled Exquisite Fine Paintings and Prints, containing 149 lots in all. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
Works with connections to France and Paris are clear standouts in this sale. Choices include a summery Giverny landscape; a huge circa-1960s depiction of Paris on the Seine; a French Impressionist river scene; a circa-2000 image of a smartly dressed, seated, behatted Parisian woman with a leopard; a French Modernist painting by Jean Marc of two nude, blue-skinned men fighting; a mid-century vibrantly green French oil painting of a lake dotted with swans; a 1960s Parisian School Cubist abstract; a set of nine French abstract paintings, dating to 1993; fashion illustrations by Genevieve Thomas; and a Robert Ladou 20th-century anatomical drawing of the skeleton of a horse.
The British are equally well-represented in the August 9 lineup. Their contributions include a George Drury marine portrait of the yachts Britannia and Lulworth racing on the Solent; a Lionel Ellis portrait of a confident-looking young woman; a 2009 Surrealist painting of lounging maidens by Richard Turner; a circa-1990s British School Cubist abstract that calls to mind a stained glass window; antique botanical watercolors from the turn of the previous century; a sparing and painterly 2018 abstract by Robert Somerton; and a circa-1990s Surrealist take on the crucifixion by Kate Orr.
Auction highlights include a circa-1960s Cubist abstract oil on board belonging to the Parisian School, estimated at $2,500-$3,000. Outside its frame, the work measures 9.75 by 15in, and it is described as being in “overall very good and sound condition.”
Also compelling is Place St. Michel, Paris, painted in 1964 by Edouard Righetti (French, 1924-2001). It depicts a view of Paris with Place St. Michel from a perspective located on the waters of the Seine river. The canvas spans 38 by 51in, and the lot notes state it is “Painted with swathes of thick impasto oil across the entire canvas – bold, daring brushwork of rich, deep blue colors and crimson hues of dramatic rustic color.” The Righetti is estimated at $2,500-$3,000.
Rounding out the highlights is a dreamy 21st-century French School landscape of Giverny in summer. Simply titled The Giverny Landscape, it depicts a church in the foreground among thickets of trees set against farmland. Lush green-blue hills provide the backdrop. Its estimate is $2,000-$2,500.
