NEW YORK – Arising from all reaches of the European Orthodox world are icons that carry rich histories and intricate religious symbolism. More than 200 objects from this category are being offered in a Jasper52 online auction on Ash Wednesday, March 6. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.

Featured in the auction is a monumental 19th-century Russian icon of what’s know as the Three Handed Virgin Mary (above). Hand-painted on a wood panel with egg tempera, gesso, levkas and gold leaf, the icon measures 37 by 30 inches. It carries a $9,000-$11,000 estimate.

A smaller icon titled St. Mary of Egypt in Vita (below) pictures the Blessed Virgin and scenes of important events in her life (est. $5,000-$6,000).

An 18th-century Russian depicting the Dormition of St. Mary is hand-painted with egg tempera, gesso and levkas on a wood panel. The silver oklad is a 19th-century addition (est. $4,500-$5,500).

Several dozen saints are pictured on a 19th-century calendar icon for the month of July. The 12.4-by-14.2-inch icon has a $4,000-$5,000 estimate.

The Christogram “IHS,” a monogram symbolizing Jesus Christ, is engraved on a traditional Gothic chalice cup and paten. The pristine set is marked “sterling silver” and has a two-tone gold and silver finish (est. $7,000-$8,000).

Dating to the 1920s is a beautiful stained glass window depicting the Crucifixion of Christ. The two-piece window is in very nice original condition (est. $6,000-$7,000).
