Also worthy of mention are a circa-1940s slate chalk board; a 39-piece child’s toy tea set from the same decade; a cast iron bottle opener in the form of a figure holding a paddle with ‘Pi Kappa Alpha’ written on it and the words ‘Pledge Hop ’64’ on the base; a large blue goose squeak toy dating to around 1900; a Meyer Texas pottery bluebonnet-motif vase and creamer, offered as separate lots; and a 1950s menu sign from the Steak & Brew in Fort Lee, N.J., which lists filet mignon, lobster tails, and a steak and lobster tail dish, each for the princely sum of $4.95, and states, ‘Help Yourself to All The Salad You Can Make!’

Standouts include an undated painted miniature carving of a pelican by Frank Finney of Cape Charles, Virginia. The handsome bird measures less than six inches tall, features glass eyes, and is signed by Finney. Its estimate is $1,800-$2,000.

Print showing Ellsworth Zouaves mustered at Camp Small, Melville, Md., during the Civil War, estimated at $1,500-$2,000
Print showing Ellsworth Zouaves mustered at Camp Small, Melville, Md., during the Civil War, estimated at $1,500-$2,000

Another compelling piece is a print depicting Camp Small, an outpost in Melville, Maryland that was active exclusively during the Civil War. It shows a company of Ellsworth Zouaves from York, Pennsylvania standing in formation. Zouaves were a light infantry regiment, French colonial in origin and known for their stylish, distinctive uniforms, which included a fez. The name Ellsworth likely refers to Elmer Ephraim Ellsworth, a friend of President Abraham Lincoln who raised and trained a regiment in New York that wore Zouave uniforms. The print, which measures 22 by 30in, carries an estimate of $1,500-$2,000.

Rounding out the highlights is a circa-1910 or -1920 cotton four-block eagle applique quilt, estimated at $1,000-$1,500. It came out of central Pennsylvania and measures 70 by 86in. The lot notes state it is “in excellent condition, with the occasional light spot/surface dirt and no wear. The quilt feels strong and sturdy overall.”
