NEW YORK – More than 300 religious icons are offered in a Jasper52 auction on Wednesday, Dec. 11. Painted images of the Holy Trinity and all the saints in heaven, along with a few three-dimensional objects, are included in this online auction. Starting at the top, a Russian silver oklad icon of Christ (above) bears a hallmark of 1886. The dramatic portrait of Jesus is hand-painted on a wood panel and contained in a wooden case. It has a $1,500-$2,000 estimate.
The prophet Elijah is a colorful and important character in the Bible. His life is chronicled in Kings I and King II – including the miracles he performed, the inspiration he caused and his dramatic ascent to heaven. A colorful icon depicting his fiery ascent to heaven is offered with an estimate of $2,000-$2,500 (below).
An icon of St. John the apostle is from the 18th or 19th century and is expected to sell for $6,000-$7,000.
Older still is an icon containing scenes from the Christmas story (est. $4,000-$6,000).
The story of St. Michael the Archangel driving Lucifer from the kingdom of heaven at the point of his sword is captured in a high-relief carving in Carrara marble. Created by a master artisan at the end of the 18th century, the finely executed work is 34 inches tall and weighs 132 pounds ($4,000-$5,000).
