Jasper52 to host important tribal art auction May 22
NEW YORK – Jasper52 will present an online auction of Exclusive Tribal Art on Friday, May 22. The 129-lot auction includes rare hand-crafted masks and figures from tribes around the world. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
The auction will open with an Ibo ochichi figural bowl and lid for serving cola nuts (above). A similar example is at Dartmouth’s Hood Museum (est. $600-$700).
Masks include a Songo mask wood, raphia, glass beads from Central Angola and a Nyamwezi mask of calabash, hair, wax and aluminium from northwest Tanzania.
A stunning example of an Igala bird headdress from Nigeria is beautifully carved.
An important female jo-nyeleni figure from the Bamana people of Mali stands nearly 17 inches high.
