NEW YORK – Lovers of Royal Doulton pottery have the opportunity to add to their collections when Jasper52 will conduct a huge no-reserve auction of the popular English pottery on Sunday, Dec. 22. This sale features figurines from one of the most universally recognized and beloved figurine makers. Several of the figurines offered are discontinued or retired models. At the top of many collectors’ want list is the scarce Jan Van Riebeeck Loving Cup (above), which was introduced in 1935. The Jan Van Riebeeck Loving Cup commemorates the Dutch navigator landing at the Cape of Good Hope in 1652 to establish a fort for the Dutch East India Company. The loving cup shows the first settlers rowing to shore from their ships anchored below Table Mountain. On the reverse, Jan Van Riebeeck shown is praying before the Dutch national flag at the Cape. The handles are modeled as full-length figures of Van Riebeeck. The 10¾-inch-high cup has a $600-$700 estimate.

Royal Doulton is perhaps best-known for its character jugs of famous persons and personae. One of the most famous of all is Santa Claus, whose jolly face is depicted on nine jugs in the sale.

Beautiful well-dressed women were favorite subjects of Royal Doulton’s modelers. Typical is the figure titled Memories, which was produced from 1938 through 1949 (est. $60-$70).

Historical figures represented in the auction include England’s Sir Walter Raleigh, who Royal Doulton honored with statuette in 1936 (est. $300-$400).

Group figures are led by Promenade, which depicts an Elizabethan couple (est. $600-$700).

The 388-lot auction will begin Sunday, Dec. 22, at 6 p.m. Eastern time. This is a no reserve; each lot will sell to the highest bidder.
