NEW YORK – Nearly 100 pieces of Viking, ancient and medieval jewelry will be offered in a Jasper52 auction on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Rings, pendants and amulets, most of which have been restored for contemporary wear, are presented in this online auction. Bid absentee or live online exclusively through LiveAuctioneers.
Among the most desirable items is a Viking votive ax battle pendant (above) dating to circa 900-1000. The 1½-inch-high pendant has been professionally refurbished with the silver overlay. It comes gift boxed and with a certificate of authenticity (est. $750-$900).
More than two dozen Viking rings are listed in the catalog. A fine warrior’s ring from the 10th century is a refinement of the popular coil form (below). It has been professionally refurbished with the gold overlay (est. $200-$300).
A Viking sorcerer’s amulet is in the shape of a duck’s webbed foot. The bronze artifact has been refurbished with silver plating (est. $650-$800).
Two carved lapis lazuli amulets in the form of cat-form bastets are offered as a pair of earrings. Each is about five-eighths inches high. They were originally part of elaborate necklace for a woman of the nobility (est. $400-$450).
Crosses come in many forms and the Jasper52 auction offers a handful of beautiful ancient examples. The back of a 1 5/8-inch-high medieval reliquary cross from the 7th-8th century is recessed for the inclusion of a relic. The front features a hand-chiseled Corpus Christi of somewhat stylized form with crossed arms and original niello inlay (est. $350-$400).
The Jasper auction will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 8 p.m.
