Of particular note, and coming in the wake of the recent six-figure sale of a similar clock by the same maker, is a rare and important Samuel Betts (London, active 1645-1673) bracket clock with elaborate engraving and double signature. The clock, fresh from a family collection in Maine and purchased in the 1950s, carries a $20,000-$30,000 estimate and should again generate excitement among collectors.
Another noteworthy item in the sale is a rare alkaline-glazed face jug, circa 1935, attributed to Harvey Ford Reinhardt of Lincoln County, North Carolina. An important folk potter of the early 20th century, Reinhardt’s face jugs are considered some of the finest of their type. This example, in very good condition, is estimated conservatively at $2,000-$3,000.
Evans & Associates is known for offering top quality furniture and decorative arts from Virginia and the South, and this sale is no different. A case in point is a rare Shenandoah Valley Federal walnut valuables/spice cabinet, circa 1820, with history of descent in an Augusta County, Va., family. This little gem, in excellent condition, carries a $5,000-$8,000 estimate and is expected to stimulate a great deal of interest.
Another important Virginia item is a rare Chippendale cherry corner chair, circa 1765, made in Petersburg. From an old Virginia collection, the rare form is estimated at $10,000-$15,000 and should perform well based on previous sales results for similar examples.
Additionally, Evans & Associates will host a lecture on Friday evening, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. by Barbara H. Magid, author, archaeological consultant, and former curator and collections manager for the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. The topic of her talk, titled “Alexandria Stoneware: What We Know Now,” encompasses new discoveries and scholarship in Alexandria, Va., pottery and will include a discussion of some select pieces from the Eddie Wilder collection. This event is free and open to the public.
