MONROVIA, Calif. – Moran’s is ringing in 2017 with an exciting selection of California, American and European works of art spanning from the 19th century to the contemporary. Consignments have been rolling in from private collections across Southern California and beyond, and the catalog for the Jan. 24 auction features over 250 works of varying styles, schools and media. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

European offerings are primarily modern and contemporary in nature, including selections by Salvador Dali, Marc Chagall and Pablo Picasso.

Nineteenth century and earlier Continental works by Harry Hall, Lesser Ury and Rembrandt are also slated to make their way to the block.

Solid examples by California artists are offered at very approachable estimates, including selections by Jessie Arms Botke, Ben Abril, Lockwood De Forest, Colin Campbell Cooper and Peter Ellenshaw.

Select figural works are sure to appeal to a wide range of collectors, including a charming portrait of a young woman wearing a wide-brimmed hat by Santa Monica-based artist Antonia Miether Melvill (1875-1972). Born in Germany, Melvill is known for her figural works, and the present offering is a fine example of the artist’s painterly style (estimate: $800 to $1,200). Another female portrait, this one a luminous, rose-tinted depiction of a lady in a headscarf posed in three-quarters profile, is offered by Boston artist Elmer Greene (1907-1964). Titled Study, Greene’s portrait (above) is offered with a $1,000 to $1,500 estimate.

Western and Native American subjects are expected to perform well throughout the evening. Estimated to bring $800 to $1,200, Wil Timpe’s South of Nogales, which depicts Mexican riders on horseback just outside a pueblo, is one of six works by the Western-genre painter to be offered in Moran’s Jan. 24 Studio Auction.

One of approximately a half dozen works by 20th century Western painter Wil Timpe consigned from the Los Angeles Goldfield Collection to be featured in Moran’s January Studio auction, ‘South of Nogales’ is expected to realize $800/$1,200. John Moran Auctioneers image

Painterly townscapes are well-represented among the highlighted lots culled from Moran’s January catalog.
