MONROVIA, Calif. – John Moran is heading into a busy fall and winter auction season with sales stacked through early 2018. The first of their fall auction events is the Sept. 12 Traditional Collector sale, which consists of a fabulous selection of French clocks, Continental furniture including a handful of pieces by framed Parisian maker Francois Linke, European works of art, porcelain by makers such as KPM and Stellmacher, and a selection of Chinese porcelain and carved stone objects, among many other treasures. Collectors are sure to be wooed by a strong selection of French mantel clocks, including a stunning large-scale Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze clock and complementary garniture by Parisian maker Charpentier (above). Dating to the third quarter 19th century, the clock takes the form of two winged putti holding aloft a circular case, and is accompanied by a pair of equally finely modeled candelabra with standing putto-form standards. The set is presented in excellent condition, and is expected to earn $30,000 to $40,000.

A Louis XV-style mantel clock and garniture, this example by maker Japy Freres et Cie, featuring a Bacchic putto motif and modeled in quite fine detail, is also notable because of its highly detailed Sevres-style porcelain inserts; the Louis XV set is expected to bring $20,000 to $30,000 at Moran’s September sale.

Buyers should also take note that a small selection of fine KPM plaques consigned from a private Southern California collection will also make their way to the auction block. One classic oval plaque after Gustav Richter’s (1823-1884 German) portrait of the Prussian Queen Louise von Mecklenburg-Strelitz is expected to bring $4,000 to $6,000.

Silver and objects of vertu include a stunning Dutch coin silver and cut-crystal epergne dating to 1873. The ornately modeled silver standard is in the form of a standing female figure, and is applied with realistically rendered flowers on stems and fitted with three tiers of cut-crystal bowls (est. $4,000 to $6,000).

Moran’s Traditional Collector catalogs always prove an excellent venue for European works of art. French artist Emmanuel de la Villeon’s 1894 impressionist painting depicting a grove of fruit trees on a hillside overlooking Lake Neuchatel in Switzerland is offered with a $3,000 to $5,000 estimate.

Louis Alexandre Bouche’s (1938-1911) village scene at dusk with sheep offers a charming view of pastoral life, and is expected to bring $5,000 to $7,000 due to its exceptional size.

Nineteenth-century Belgian painter Vincent de Vos (1829-1875) is represented by an interior scene of dogs playing with mice before a still life of cheese, garlic and a jug of wine (est. $4,000 to $6,000).

One of a number of intriguing Chinese and Japanese consignments to Moran’s Sept. 12th auction catalog, a Japanese mixed-metal vase dating to circa 1900 is presented in excellent condition. It features dragon-form handles and raised on five abstracted grotesque-headed legs (est. $3,000-$5,000).
