MONROVIA, Calif. – John Moran Auctioneers has announced a new biannual auction model, the Studio Auction, which will be composed of an eclectic mix of artworks from worldwide artists dating from the 19th century through the contemporary – all offered at approachable price points. John Moran’s inaugural Studio Auction on July 30 will feature paintings, prints, photographs and sculptures covering a variety of subjects and styles by European, Asian, Russian, North and South American artists.

Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.com.

With most works carrying estimates under $1,000, Morans’ Studio Auction aims to cater to burgeoning private collectors or those looking to add charming pieces to existing collections without breaking the bank.

All auction lots in the Studio Auction will be fully photographed and cataloged.

Highlights include a vibrantly hued oil on canvas offering a dynamic view of parrots in flight (above) by Julius Moessel (Chicago, 1871-1957). Moessel’s work is to be offered at the Studio Auction for $800 to $1,200 (above).

Los Angeles artist Daniel Sayre Groesbeck (1878-1950) is represented in Moran’s Salon sale by a mixed media work depicting a Russian cathedral interior. Dating to 1913, the composition features minimal pops of royal blue and red to highlight the dimly lit but decidedly ornate space. The last painting by Groesbeck more than tripled its high estimate when offered at Moran’s March 2015 Fine Art Auction. With this in mind, Moran’s is cautiously optimistic that the present example will outstrip the conservative $1,000 to $2,000 estimate.

New Modern and Contemporary American art collectors will be pleased to see that Moran’s Studio Auction features a number of works by well-known 20th century artists, including Norman Rockwell, Peter Max and Leo Politi, all offered at conservative pricepoints. Additional contemporary and modern highlights include a masterfully executed figural work by Wade Reynolds (Los Angeles, 1929-2011) depicting a contemplative man seated near a pier; the painting is expected to bring $800 to $1200 at Moran’s sale (below).

A large-scale impressionist oil painting by Kalman Aron (Los Angeles, b. 1924) is also on offer. Aron’s charming, painterly work depicts men playing chess and checkers in a public park (estimate: $800 to $1,200).

An intriguing work by Fil Mottola (Laguna Niguel, Calif., 1915-2008) will be brought to the block with a conservative $300 to $500 auction estimate. Executed in blocky, bright hues, the untitled landscape is Mottola’s take on an Eyvind Earle-style landscape; both painters were artists for Disney Animation Studios.

European offerings include works covering a variety of subjects, including a watercolor and oil painting depicting figures within a sunlit chapel interior by British painter Samuel Prout (1783-1852), which is expected to earn between $600 and $800 (below). Italian artist Frederick Galli’s (b. 1932) etching of a stark winter landscape takes an interesting bird’s-eye-view of a frozen river; the work is expected to bring $500 to $700.
