Julia Reed Estate to open Neal Winter Auction Feb. 5-7

NEW ORLEANS – Neal Auction Co. is set to offer the Estate of Julia Reed, journalist, author, and arbiter of taste, within its Feb. 5-7 Important Winter Estates Auction. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

Recognized throughout her career as a keen observer of the political scene, fashion, food and design, Reed was also celebrated as a great tastemaker, hostess, cook and arbiter of interior style. Her New York, New Orleans and Greenville, Mississippi, homes reflected her widely admired taste, integrating objects collected in a lifetime of travel and adventure with traditional antiques and decorations.

Whether the topic was haute couture or haute cuisine, Reed celebrated designers and artisans and introduced readers to their talents. Reed’s work was dedicated to increasing the visibility of achievement and effort of those artists regardless of their medium. Her generosity of spirit was best displayed in her writings and – for those with the supreme good fortune to have a seat at her gracious dining tables – through her exceptional gifts as a hostess.

The Mississippi Delta is the place to which Reed always returned from her global travels as a journalist. Reed introduced colleagues and friends to the land she loved and introduced thousands more to her community through her writing. By seeing the region through her eyes, countless people developed an appreciation and fondness for the Delta in particular, and the South in general.

Reed was deeply involved in the community of New Orleans, where she lived for over 30 years. She served on the boards of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Link-Stryjewski Foundation, and as an ambassador for the city’s restaurants and talented chefs.

Day one of Neal Auction’s forthcoming Feb. 5, 6 and 7 Important Winter Estates Auction showcases Reed’s collection of fine art, sculpture, decorative arts and accoutrements of entertaining, much of which has been featured in books and magazines over the years. The auction will be virtual with telephone, absentee and online bidding through liveauctioneers. Preview will be “by appointment” began Monday, Jan. 25.

The Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust, which is the sole beneficiary of the auction of her estate collection, will continue her work, as set out in their mission statement: The Julia Evans Reed Charitable Trust continues the philanthropic work that Julia began in her lifetime to help people in need. The charitable trust does this by supporting organizations dedicated to providing the things in life that Julia deemed essential: a good home, nourishing food, a quality education, and opportunities for learning, literacy and engagement in the arts.
