Julien’s Auctions spotlights international sports stars in May 18 sale

NEW YORK – Los Angeles-based Julien’s Auctions will present Sports Legends 2018 at New York’s Hard Rock Cafe on May 18. A collection of 300 items of celebrity sporting memorabilia from some of the world’s greatest international football stars from the past 100 years will be offered. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
Highlighted will be the Collection of Juan Carlos Marenda, who played for the Argentina national football team from 1969 to 1977 and for the Argentinos Juniors from 1969 to 1975. This historic auction will also feature the collection of former Dutch football player Jordi Cruyff, son of former Dutch player and manager John Cruyff. Rounding out the sale will be the Collection of Julio Olarticoechea who played for the Argentina national football team on three FIFA World Cup teams, including in the 1986 match when Argentina won the World Cup.

Among the most coveted pieces offered will be six FIFA World Cup Winner’s medals and trophy including: a 1978 Gold Winner’s medal awarded to José Daniel Valencia, member of the World Cup champion Argentina team (estimate: $40,000–$60,000); a 1986 FIFA World Cup Gold Winner’s medal awarded to José Luis Brown, member of the World Cup champion Argentina team (estimate: $60,000–$80,000); and a 1930 FIFA World Cup Winner’s Medal from the inaugural FIFA World Cup (estimate: $30,000–$40,000).

Other highlights include a Pelé football from a 1977 photo shoot with Andy Warhol (estimate: $8,000–$12,000); a Lionel Messi 2012 Argentina National Team Match worn jersey and boots (estimate: $4,000–$6,000) and a Pelé inscribed “Copa 70” football boots from his personal collection (estimate: $10,000–$20,000.)
