LOS ANGELES – Julien’s Auctions’ triannual Street and Contemporary Art Auction will take place Thursday, April 25 live at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills and online. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
The collection will include a world-class array of works by some of the most talked about and renowned artists and icons of today including Banksy, Invader, Mr. Brainwash, KAWS, Damien Hirst, Shepard Fairey, Sandra Chevrier, Takashi Murakami, Ai Weiwei, David Hockney, Alec Monopoly, RETNA, D*Face, FAILE and Max Zorn.
Considered one of the most controversial street artists and activists of all time, Banksy’s socio-political commentary and the remarkable auctions of his artworks continue to make headlines around the world, most notably the sale of Girl With Balloon which shredded itself seconds after the gavel came down for £1million and the recent sale at Julien’s Auctions of the mural Slave Labour that sold for an astounding $730,000 to fellow artist Ron English.
Ghetto Rat (estimate: $60,00-$80,000) is from Banksy’s most iconic and recognizable series of characters. The original aerosol stencil on concrete was executed over a decade ago on the facade of a Hayne Street building near the famous Smithfield Meat Market in London. It was deemed as graffiti by the city council and subsequently whitewashed over. The building itself was eventually demolished to make way for the Crossrail transit line, and the artwork was carefully extricated and painstakingly restored.
Julien’s Auctions will be offering a Ron English canvas titled Cowgirl (below; estimate: $8,000-$10,000) alongside the highly anticipated sale of another important work by Banksy, Blowpop Records (estimate: $8,000-$10,000).
Blowpop Records (estimate: $8,000-$10,000) is an album sleeve bearing an original stencil by Banksy. The artist is reported to have befriended the owner of the record company and offered to create an album cover free of charge. Fewer than 100 of the promo sleeves are believed to exist. This rare example includes the Capoeira Twins 12-inch vinyl containing the tracks 4X3 and Truth Will Out with the proper matrix numbers and runout groove data.
SD_10 (aka The Mothership) (estimate: $60,000-$80,000) a monumental tile mosaic by the famed French street artist Invader was created in the summer of 2010 on the facade of the Art Center Building in San Diego as part of the exhibition “Viva la Revolucion: A Dialogue with The Urban Landscape” organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art (SD). The building is currently being remodeled and the mural must be sold to prevent its destruction.
Other highlights include Mr. Brainwash’s Madonna (estimate: $10,000-$15,000) an original acrylic work on canvas featuring the same base image of Madonna created by the artist for the cover of the pop icon’s Celebration album; Pablo Picasso’s Wood-Owl (estimate: $20,000-$30,000) a painted earthenware vase from a limited edition of 500; Damien Hirst’s I Love You (estimate: $10,000-$15,000) a screenprint from a limited edition of 14; and Shepard Fairey’s Obey with Caution (estimate: $8,000-$10,000) a unique artist’s proof HPM on wood.
The auction will be conducted Thursday, April 25, at 6 p.m. Pacific time/9 p.m. Eastern, at the Standard Oil Building Beverly Hills, 257 N. Canon Drive.
