NEW YORK – The immortal Jeffrey Lebowski, better known as the Dude from the equally immortal 1998 film The Big Lebowski, was on to something when he observed that a well-chosen rug can really tie a room together. Pick the right textile–and don’t feel like you have to place it on the floor, you can hang it on the wall if you think it looks better that way–and you will elevate everything else in the whole setting. A rug can bring out harmonies in your decor that weren’t nearly as emphatic or pronounced before it entered the scene.
On June 8, Jasper52 will stage a sale of Mid-Century to Modern Rugs, with bids opening at 5 pm Eastern time. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers. The auction presents 553 lots’ worth of possibilities. Here are three of the most notable.
Lot 0288 features what’s described as a “hand-knotted masterpiece” in light khaki wool. Originating in India, the newly completed rug features mind-bendingly elaborate decoration and measures a bit more than nine feet by a bit more than 12 feet. It carries an estimate of $3,500-$4,000 and a reserve of $2,867.
Also from India is a luxuriously blue and ivory-colored rug that was completed in 2018 or so. Rendered in wool, silk, and cotton, the lot notes describes it as having been “Knotted for months and months in the centuries-old weaving craftsmanship techniques by expert artisans.” It is generously sized, unfurling to cover 12 ft, three in by 18 feet, four in. It is estimated at $8,000-$10,000 and has a reserve of $6,324.
Rounding out the rug highlights is an example woven in Iran some time between 1970 and 1999 with an image of the Tree of Life. The hand-knotted rug boasts a wide range of colors: blues, reds, greens, browns, yellows, lavender, and ivory white. It measures five ft, two in by eight feet and is estimated at $8,000-$10,000, with a reserve of $6,900.
