Kamelot Auctions to celebrate Midcentury Modern Jan. 30
PHILADELPHIA – Kamelot Auctions is kicking off 2020 with two sales at the end of the month. An online-only Mid Mod sale will take place on Jan. 30, commencing at 1 p.m. Eastern time. The following Saturday, Feb. 1, will be an Estate Auction, containing English and Irish furniture, lighting and decorative arts. Bidding will begin at 11 a.m. Eastern time. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Kamelot’s first auction of the new year on Jan. 30 is a collection of mid-century designs, heavily featuring Italian furniture, including the pair of zebra-patterned club chairs in Lot 5, estimated to bring $1,500-$2,500, and Lot 225, an unusual crescent-shaped sofa in two parts. Also featured in this sale are simple yet stylish pieces in futuristic materials such as Lucite and chrome.
Examples include Lot 57, a sleek silver mirror by Christopher Guy, and the 1970s Lucite pedestal in Lot 27. Those with more classic tastes may prefer the catalog’s selection of Art Deco lots, such as the lovely icicle chandelier in Lot 98, the pair of floral upholstered club chairs in Lot 101, or Lot 97, a sideboard made of curly maple, estimated at $600-$800.
The Estate Auction on Feb. 1 will contain pieces from the 50-year collection of a major New York City dealer. Elaborately carved English and Irish furniture, including the intricate oak fireplace mantel in Lot 2507 and the elegant sofa in Lot 2126, are prominently featured. Other standout lots are Lot 2110, a monumental antique English mahogany breakfront circa 1800, valued at $2,000-$4,000, and an American Federal giltwood mirror in Lot 2465.
Collectors of unusual antique furniture items may choose to bid on the Biedermeier sofa with hidden compartments in Lot 2015, or Lot 2045, a 19th-century cast-iron overmantel, both expected to bring $800-$1,200.
