PHILADELPHIA – Kamelot Auctions is kicking off the spring 2021 auction season with a groundbreaking sale of decorative arts, artwork and furniture on March 23-25. Close to 1,000 lots will be offered in these sales including furniture from a variety of styles and periods, decorative arts, silver, porcelain, textiles, lighting and fine art, among many other categories. Many of the lots in the Collector’s Sale on March 23 hail from the estate of the legendary Philadelphia antique dealer Izzy Taylor. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.
Taylor’s first business on Ninth and Pine streets was known as I. Taylor & Associates. Veteran collectors and dealers will remember him associating with Charles Reese, Joe Davidson, Joe Zulli, Charles Sterling and Phineas “Fin” Meade. Taylor’s daughter Linda and her husband, Richard, have carried on his legacy by tirelessly collecting priceless antiques throughout the years. These remarkable pieces will be in all three days of Kamelot’s March sales. The items are expected to attract competitive bidding from devoted antique collectors.
Antiquing ran in the Taylor family. Izzy’s father, Benjamin, was the one who introduced him to the business. Benjamin operated on a much smaller scale but taught Izzy the importance of unique and quality items. Taylor later opened an even larger storefront at 4415 Chestnut St. This space had over 25,000 square feet of showroom space featuring every conceivable antique item from all over the world, priced from $1 to $10,000.
Taylor combined the art of manufacturing, sourcing and buying locally to keep their spacious store consistently stocked. They also maintained a staff of resident buyers in Europe. The store was the first of its kind to be multifaceted in sourcing and producing. A savvy businessman, Taylor was beloved as one of the most honest men with a penchant for flair. At one time he owned five Rolls Royce automobiles.
Taylor’s estate populates a strong majority of the Collector’s Sale on March 23 with phenomenal decorative arts pieces. Lots 1149 through 1163 encompass a nearly 200-piece set of St. James sterling silver by Tiffany & Co. There are 10 impressive KPM porcelain plaques featured in the March 23 sale. Lot 1030 features a 19th century KPM plaque with a hand-painted scene of men playing cards in a tavern (below). This piece is estimated from $2,000-$4,000. Lot 1032 is another stunning KPM porcelain plaque after an original painting by Hendrik Siemiradzki (above; est. $3,000-$4,000).
There will also be an abundance of bronze. Lot 2244 in the March 24 sale is a four-piece Egyptian revival bronze desk set, circa 1900 (est. $200-$300). A pair of 35-inch-tall bronze sculptures of Mercury and Venus on black marble bases will sell as a single lot (est. $300-$500).
The Collector’s Sale also features a few standout pieces by Jansen in the Collector’s Sale. Lot 1002, a classic Jansen bronze mounted dining table, circa 1940, has already attracted competitive bidding (est. $2,000-$3,000).
The auction is packed with spectacular French pieces. Lot 1138 is a 19th century Planchon French bronze sunburst cartel clock surmounted by a cherub with torch and floriate castings with roses (est. $800-$1,200).
