BEVERLY, Mass. – Kaminski Auctions will present their annual Thanksgiving Auction on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 24-25, starting at 10 a.m. Eastern time both days. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.
This exciting two-day auction features fine jewelry from a New York City and Palm Beach, Florida, socialite; a jewelry collection from Joan Potter of Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts; the contents of a Malibu and Los Angeles, California, estate; and a collection of rare Charlie Chaplin movie posters from the Montecito Inn, Santa Barbara, California.
Auction highlights begin with a rare Steuben glass cathedral spire designed by the artist George Thompson. The crystal spire is studded with 18K gold, sterling, and diamonds and is from an edition of five. It is signed “Steuben” and measures 18¼ inches high together with a black marble base. Originally purchased through the Christie’s auction of the Leona Helmsley Estate in New York City, the piece is referenced in chapter 11 of The Art of Steuben, published in a limited edition by Steuben Glass, New York, 1972.
Collectors will also take note of a René Lalique circa 1930 Art Deco clear and frosted glass Deux Figurines clock. Beautifully decorated with two females in diaphanous gowns draping a floral garland around the clock face, it sits on an illuminated base, signed “R. Lalique” and measures 21 inches high overall. It is referenced on page 371, figure 726 of the Rene Lalique Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre de Verre by Felix Marcilhac.
Glass highlights continue with several pieces by the contemporary glass blower Dale Chihuly. The top lot is an outstanding piece exhibited at the New York Museum in Woodstock, New York, and the New York City World Trade Center. The giant hand-blown glass macchia bowl (above) stands 42 inches high and 16 inches square and is presented on a lighted Lucite revolving pedestal. It is signed and dated 1987 and is estimated at $12,000-$16,000. Additionally, there is a Dale Chihuly hand-blown sea form macchia basket executed in iridescent pink, signed and dated 1998 and a Chihuly hand-blown red Persian sea form sculpture, signed and dated 1999. Both are 9 inches in height by 11 inches diameter and are valued at $3,000-$5,000.
Fine art in the sale abounds starting with a Salvador Dali watercolor on paper of a rose headed woman estimated at $15,000-$20,00, and an Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Campbell’s Beef Consommé Soup, screen-print in colors on paper, rubber stamp numbered 43/250, ink signed and published by the Factory Additions and printed by the Salvatore Silkscreen Co. from the Martin Lawrence Gallery, New York. Referenced in the Andy Warhol Prints, 4th edition by Feldman/Schellmann, Figure 11.52, it is estimated to bring $12,000-$16,000.
Among the other notable entries is a Picasso print in pencil signed, dated 10/8/55 and numbered 37/500, which is from a Boca Raton, Florida collection.
A recently discovered work by Emile Gruppe (1896-1978) may be one of the most significant paintings of his career. Measuring 50 by 40 inches, the marine view of Gloucester, Massachusetts, is titled The Old Timer, and is dated 1977. This work solidifies Gruppe’s mastery of painting ships and is conservatively estimated at $40,000-$60,000.
A selection of Russian art on offer includes a Lanskoy (Russian) portrait of an old man in contemplation in the countryside. The oil on canvas from a New York City collection, it is estimated at $30,000-$40,000. There is a view of St. Petersburg across the Neva River, done in watercolor and gouache on board by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky (Russian,1875-1957.) The Impressionist style painting is titled White Night, St. Petersburg, bears the artist’s monogram and is valued at $30,000-$40,000.
Just in time for the holidays, Kaminski presents two fabulous collections of jewelry from a Palm Beach and a Martha’s Vineyard estate with such iconic names as David Webb, Buccellati, Henry Dunay, Judith Ripka and David Yurman.
Outstanding signed David Webb brooches include an 18K yellow gold and platinum brooch with two cabochon emeralds surrounded by 18 cabochon rubies, and 81 round diamonds, along with a second brooch of 18K gold and platinum having cabochon rubies surrounded by diamonds. A signed Henry Dunay 18K yellow gold brooch with a large center opal surrounded by round diamonds, marquise and pear-shaped sapphires, and pear-shaped emeralds is valued at $3,000-$5,000.
A stunning 18K white gold, diamond, and ruby necklace, with 78 straight baguette diamonds in groups of six, and approximately G-I color, VS-SI, and 189 straight baguette rubies in groups of four, with appraisal report value of $35,000 is sure to garner considerable interest.
A Natural History of British Birds by William Hayes, 1775, dedicated to the Duchess of Northumberland by William Hayes, is an elephant folio with 36 hand-colored engravings including two double pages. It has been rebound in fine leather with gilt titles (original boards present) and is housed in a presentation box along with the original covers. Complete restoration details are inside the case. The book was commissioned by George III for the Duchess of Northumberland (Elizabeth Percy).
Celebrating the 90th anniversary of the Montecito Inn and honoring the current owners, the D. Copus family of Montecito, California, Kaminski Auctions was honored to be part of a gala preview event to view the historic collection of Charlie Chaplin original theatrical poster art that has hung in the Montecito Inn since the early 1900s. These rare images of Hollywood’s golden era are on offer in the Kaminski Thanksgiving Auction.
The famous hotel, originally built by Charlie Chaplin, who fell in love with the area. He and a group of investors built the Montecito Inn in 1928 as an upscale getaway. It soon became one of the most desirable destinations along the California coast. In 1943, Chaplin returned to Montecito to marry the love of his life, Oona O’Neill at the hotel. The poster art collection includes rare one of a kind movie posters and movie lithographs.
