NEW YORK – On Thursday, June 29, starting at 11 am Eastern time, Capsule Auctions presents The Luxury Sale, which includes items such as fine jewelry, silver, fashion items and fashion illustrations. The sale is Capsule’s inaugural luxury auction and will feature pieces from renowned brands such as Hermes, Tiffany & Co., Cartier and Steuben. Capsule continues to offer items from the collection of the estate of Geoffrey Beene, including fashion illustrations by Joe Eula, Issey Miyake and Jesper Nyeboe, as well as a selection of vintage bespoke mannequins, the proceeds of which will benefit the Geoffrey Beene Cancer Research Center at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.
A likely top lot is an Hermes Birkin 35 in black togo leather with gold hardware. The Hermes Birkin, notorious for being elusive in this particular color combination, is the epitome of classic luxury. It carries an estimate of $15,000-$18,000.
Tiffany & Co. is represented in several lots of the sale, perhaps most spectacularly by a 14K gold multi-layer necklace with an estimate of $2,500-$4,500. The piece sports clean lines and exudes understated glamour.
Adding some sparkle to the sale is a platinum-set diamond ring with a 1.2-carat center stone that is flanked by a spectacular tiered arrangement of 26 smaller diamonds. The crescent-shape clusters halo the center brilliant-cut diamond, and the whole is estimated at $2,000-$3,000.
Highlights from the estate of Geoffrey Beene include the aforementioned bespoke vintage mannequins, including an atelier mannequin, estimated at $1,000-$2,000, which is of particular interest. This mannequin was used personally by Geoffrey Beene in his atelier to mark and design dresses, making it an incredibly special fashion history item. Its hand-drawn markings add an artistic flair to the one-of-a-kind item. Another mannequin lot worthy of mention is a trio that has a black sun-like pattern on each, in differing base colors of teal, red and violet. Offered as one lot, they are estimated at $1,800-$2,400.
A selection of original fashion drawings from the Geoffrey Beene collection will appear in the June 29 sale lineup, including a lot of 11 original Joe Eula ink and watercolor illustrations that are together estimated at $1,500-$2,000.
During the course of his 60-year career, Eula worked closely with many designers such as Valentino, Givenchy, Halston and Yves Saint Laurent. He sketched and photographed major European collections for various publications, including French and Italian Harper’s Bazaar, and designed iconic advertisements for Tiffany & Co., Josie Natori and Geoffrey Beene. Describing Joe Eula, Geoffrey Beene said, “His work is full of energy even when the figures are standing still. They aren’t as simple as they look. They are urban people. They’re like Joe, both restless and sophisticated.”
