WILSON, N.C. – An exciting event scheduled for the holiday weekend is Langston Auction Gallery’s 491-lot Annual Labor Day Auction, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 7. Internet live bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com.
Langston’s is a busy auction house that is a favorite with dealers and collectors alike. They conduct, on average, two sales per month, but over holiday weekends, they really pull in the bidders with their special antiques and fine estate auctions, such as the one coming up on Labor Day.
The company’s holiday auctions always include a fine selection of 17th, 18th, and 19th-century French, English, American and Southern antiques, as well as porcelains, sterling, glassware, lamps, chandeliers, mirrors, paintings and Oriental rugs
Our picks for Labor Day at Langston’s include lot 333, a 36-inch by 43½-inch (sight) American primitive oil painting of a little girl, titled In Memory of Nellie Bronson Goddard. The framed work features a desirable subject, as early American child portraits are always in demand. The artwork is estimated at $4,000-$6,000.
The auction also includes American furniture and several excellent American tall-case clocks. Lot 412, an 18th-century Pennsylvania walnut tall case with moon dial has the look of a cherished family heirloom, and could bring $10,000-$15,000.
Another elegant timekeeper is lot 560, a signed, late-18th or early 19th-century cherry tall-case clock of New Jersey origin. It is expected to make $8,000-$15,000.
An 18th-century mahogany fall-front glass door secretary with fretwork top is another top lot. Entered as lot 340, it could realize $2,750-$4,000 on auction day.
A very pleasing array of decorative art has been included, and some pieces do double duty as utilitarian objects. An example is lot 498, a 19th-century Rose Mandarin shrimp dish estimated at $500-$600.
