BERKELEY, Calif. – PBA Galleries will conduct an auction of fine pens on Thursday, Sept. 3. The sale consists of over 200 lots of rare, interesting and important writing instruments, both modern and vintage. Included are numerous fine Montblancs from the Writers Series, Patron of Art Series and Artisan Editions. Bid absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers.

The sale continues with a selection fine modern limited pens from a diverse array of makers, including Montegrappa, OMAS, Pelikan, Cartier, Krone, Visconti and Aurora. Rounding out the catalog is a splendid assortment of vintage pens from makers including Montblanc, Parker, Waterman and Namiki, as well as a number of elegant Tiffany inkwells and a handful of fine timepieces.

A distinct pairing is found in the Montblanc Peter I the Great and Catherine II the Great pair of 18K gold limited edition 888 fountain pens (above), which incorporate decorative motifs emblematic of Imperial Russia. The pens are solid 18K white and rose gold filigree set with emeralds and rubies, over green and aubergine resin bodies (estimate: $7000-$10,000).

Fine Montblanc pens pay homage to history’s most spectacular personalities. The Montblanc H.S.H Princesse Grace de Monaco limited edition fountain pen is Montblanc’s tribute to Grace Patricia Kelly, Her Serene Highness Princess Grace of Monaco. The barrel and cap are engraved with Princess Grace’s monogram, overlaid with rose-colored lacquer, with four rows of diamonds adorning the cap and barrel, a pink petal-cut sapphire set into the clip, 18K champagne gold fittings, and a mother-of-pearl cap-top star. The limited edition pen is one of only 29 examples (estimate: $25,000-$35,000).

Inspired by the creator of the iconic Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Montblanc Gustave Eiffel 18K white gold skeleton fountain pen (below)features a skeletonized barrel and cap of 18K white gold with an intricate rivet pattern mirroring that of the famous tower, one of only 91 examples (estimate: $25,000-$35,000).

When it comes to rarities, the auction does not fall short. Spirited bidding is expected for the Montblanc Masters for Meisterstück black porcelain fountain pen (below), one of Montblanc’s rarest pens. Almost instantly discontinued upon production due to the difficulty of producing pens with this material, the existing pen provides a flawless example of a true connoisseur’s pen seldom offered for sale (estimate: $10,000-$15,000).
