NEW YORK – Arising from Eastern Orthodoxy are icons that carry rich histories and intricate religious symbolism. Depicting gospel scenes and the lives of saints, these ornate paintings remain faithful to the stories of Christ, the Virgin Mary and countless more. Jasper52 will conduct an online auction of nearly 200 painted icons as well as dozens of crucifixes and other Christian figures on Tuesday, June 16. A 19th-century Greek icon commemorates the martyred Saints Simon, Guriy and Aviv. Their deaths were ordered by Roman Emperor Licinius (circa A.D. 263–325) for the zealous spreading of Christianity. These saints are believed to guard the homes of the faithful. The icon (above) measures about 13½ by 11¼ inches and has a $700-$800 estimate.
