Lustrous sterling silver in the spotlight at online auction Oct. 10

NEW YORK – Time-honored silver items are the focus of a Jasper52 online auction Oct. 10. Lots range from 18th-century trays and teapots to 20th-century Georg Jensen and Tiffany flatware. Absentee and Internet live bidding is available through LiveAuctioneers.

Among the earlier pieces is an assembled George III sterling silver tea set (below) consisting of a teapot and coffee pot by Daniel Pontifex and a cream jug and sugar bowl by William Fountain. The vessels have oval-shaped half-fluted bodies with gadroon borders, scroll handles and spouts, and gilt interiors. Each is engraved with family crests. The set is expected to sell for $2,000-$2,500.

Also bearing a London hallmark is a sterling silver tea tray by Horace Woodward & Co. Made in 1913, the oblong tray has acanthus capped handles and a palmette border (est. $3,000-$3,500).

Moving to the Continent, a Biedermeier-style silver cigar box, made in Hungary circa 1940, features a lobed body and lid (est. $450-$550).

Several lots of Georg Jensen sterling silver flatware are offered. A set of 12 mocha spoons in the Acorn pattern are presented in its original box.

Another Georg Jensen lot consists of six luncheon forks in the Pyramid pattern, designed by Harald Nielsen in 1926.

American entries are led by a Gorham sterling silver soup tureen made in the Neoclassical style. It bears an engraved monogram “EMB” and a presentation inscription on the underside dated 1893 (est. $2,000-$2,500).

The Jasper52 auction of Antique to Mid-Century Modern Silver will be held Oct. 10 beginning at 8 p.m. Central Time.
