LOS ANGELES — Bonhams‘ latest timed-plus auction takes on iconic photography of the Golden State in Made in California: Photography. The auction goes live for bidding Friday, December 1 and runs through Monday, December 11 at LiveAuctioneers.

Julius Shulman (1910-2009) is a legend among Californian photographers, having produced some of the most iconic images of architecture — particularly mid-century hillside and Palm Springs homes — ever taken. Four images of Shulman’s work appear in the Bonhams sale, with Kaufmann House, Palm Springs, Richard Neutra, Architect, 1947 his top-estimated lot. Famed mid-century architect Neutra helped jump-start Shulman’s career after seeing images Shulman took of one of his homes using an amateur Kodak consumer camera. The image is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Taken in 1938, Half Dome, Merced River, Winter, Yosemite Valley is an iconic image from the body of work produced by Ansel Adams (1902-1984). This gelatin silver print was produced by the photographer’s San Francisco studio some time between 1950 and 1957 and carries the studio’s stamp on the reverse. It is also signed in ink on the mount. Half Dome is estimated at $30,000-$50,000.

Best remembered for his candid portraits of celebrities, Terry O’Neill (1938-2019) worked from the 1960s until his death producing an untold number of images of the famous and infamous. This iconic shot of actress Faye Dunaway, titled The Morning After, documents her poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel, gazing upon on her Academy Award for her role in the 1977 film Network, with a mix of emotions playing across her face. The print is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.
